No they weren't. But they got what they wanted by saying it.
No way they could field teams in all sports and run complete programs only competing with each other. They need the lesser conferences to keep from having to beat up on each other. Many of these school refuse to go away from home in non conference games. Would be impossible for them to so if they broke away.
That's like saying the nba needs the d league to stay competitive. 65 teams will be able to form great schedules & will function just fine in only playing one another. They'll change the rules for admittance into their tourneys/playoffs, therefore losing a few games won't matter but for seeding.

Realignment will CUT the total number of team not increase them. Texas moves to SEC. Big 12 folds. Then you have Iowa State, Kansas State or TCU being left out in cold. There will only be 64 teams left when realignment is over. Four conferences with 16 teams each. The last thing the big 5 is going to do is split the money more ways.

Most asinine example i have ever seen. NBA teams do not play against D league. It would be like the Southwest and Southeast divisions saying they do not not Eastern, Central. Northwest and Pacific divisions.

I believe we'll look back and realize this was the true beginning of the end. Maybe not the complete, utter end of all options, but any practical, meaningful existence.

Quote:Supporters of more autonomy said it would allow more benefits for athletes in the Big 5 conferences, while opponents said it could hurt recruiting for smaller schools.
To which the supporters replied... "yeah.... that's what we said."

It'll happen. The sec knew very well that when they took A&M they were after a bigger fish. & longhorn fans are now seeing that A&M in the sec is a powerful combination & A&M has caught up in the arms race in only 2 years. Signs going up all over Texas stating "Texas is SEC country" when it happens, Who knows where the rest of the big12 lands. Geographically nothing makes sense for any of them. So I'd expect they all fight tooth & nail to stay in. Question is, who's the 16th team to the sec? I do think that there is a superconference left to be made between the best of the American, the big 12, and the MountainWest.

Sports leagues through the years have expanded to bring their product to more markets. I wonder if this might act as contraction. I know the power conferences hold all the cards but certainly there must be some pockets of the country where NCAA football won't be followed as closely once this split takes hold.
If their are dollars laying out there for them to get, that might drive the expansion to 16 teams in each conference. Television , just as in the past several years, will dictate what happens.
Maybe there is still a chance for us but I'm not holding my breath. This sucks, alot!

The only shot we have is 5 16 team leagues. 80 teams puts us in.

This is a tough one for me to predict. The NCAA STILL RUNS the NCAA tourney and for BB we should be okay in the sense that we can still tell recruits that we can play for the national title, play in a very good conference, will have games on TV, etc..
For football, game over. And, let's be honest, this whole thing is about CFB and not basketball. The new 'playoff' for college FB will NEVER have a non-power 5 team invited to it.....book it. CFB WAS my favorite sport but after this utter power play, I may have to rethink my loyalty.

I'm there with you. My enthusiasm for this season just went away. If your favorite team is guaranteed no chance to compete them where's the hope? Even with my personal belief that we'll always suck, I still hope against hope. But no
More.

If you are a male athlete in non revenue sport prepare to lose your team. With the monopoly that will exist when it comes to bowls and post season basketball when the Big 5 start openly bidding for top players. Non Big 5 conferences will be seeing revenue short falls. Since they cannot touch Title IX teams it looks as if the non revenue men's teams will be the one having to bite the bullet.

RE: NY Times: NCAA votes to give greater autonomy to richest conferences
It's really getting easier to just forget the football nonsense to be in the Cool Kids group.
I'm perfectly happy if we completely split and form our own playoff system for OUR National Championship.
I'm also a very firm believer that once this split happens that NOBOBY left behind should ever agree to playing non-conference BCS teams.
That is the only way we can fight back. Make them play each other all season.
We shouldn't be anyone's patsy.
Breaking away for good helps our budget because we can stop trying be what we aren't.
We can put all these capital campaigns to work to make us the best we can be without worrying about trying to keep up with SEC schools
It's ridiculous.

Well, hell. While we're at it, let's just drop ALL sports and focus on academics.
