Cool Events attended at NIU
Back in 1982-1983, the Men's NIU Gymnastic team was nationally ranked. They had a exhibition meet against the Junio Soviet Union team. The place was packed and rocking. NIU did well be was out matched by the Russians. Very cool event.

I went to this (first year at NIU), and have an interesting story. Earlier that day me and a couple of dorm mates went to the Student Center book store. We decided to take the elevator up to the ballroom to check out the campus view. Elevator wouldn't let us go to top floor (button was locked), so we went to tallest floor we could. Elevator opens, and I noticed there is a window down the hall we could all look out of. I'm leading the way as we walk past some open hotel rooms. Half way to the window this Eastern European guy comes out and starts yelling at me "what are you doing on this floor it's restricted, get out, etc." I say no problem and he escorts me to the elevator. Elevator closes and my friend bursts out laughing. I'm like what so funny, well apparently when I walked past the open hotel room the guy originally came out with an automatic weapon. We always figured it was the KGB providing security for the gymnasts.

Move in weekend Freshman year. They had a HUGE (20ft tall made of mostly railroad lumber) bonfire in front of Stevenson North. They also had a DJ...and about 50 twister mats with about 200-300 17-19yr old coeds being played all at once.

RE: Cool Events attended at NIU
Does getting drunk a lot of weekends all over DeKalb count?

One of my favorite events was the sprig game my junior year (spring 2012). We went I the all you can eat tent and drank a lot and took home a free box of 100 tacos.

My favorite memory from NIU was actually my first game when NIU hosted Iowa state. I was like 12 or so and my whole family went and we had first row seats. We brought my neighbor who was 13 and my brothers got us NIU shirts and my buddy said then he was going to NIU. Now he's a proud alum and is going to NIU law school.

I was there as well...

Athletically, it has to be tie between beating Maryland/Iowa State in 2003 (I was a brand new alumn at that point but still acting the college kid), coming back for homecoming in 2005 with a crew of 10 fellow alumns and just having a blast, and probably the hot tub sophomore year at UP.. COGS

RE: Cool Events attended at NIU
I remember attending the "LoveLine" MTV show with Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew sometime in I think it was Fall of 1998. I also think it was hosted in one of the ballrooms in Holmes Student Center (not sure though) I remember that show being fairly popular in the late 90's early 2000's. I remember that it was a packed house and the questions to Dr. Drew were fairly ridiculous. Anyone else attend this event?

Perhaps the most unusual event I ever attended at NIU was the Erotic Film Festival in the mid 1970's. I remember seeing "Deep Throat" there. Unfortunately, it was with my brother, who attended NIU at the time.

It was quite a controversial event for its time. I remember waking up the next morning with a sore throat. I ate footlong hot dogs for a week after that. It had a deep effect on my life and helped make me the person I am today.

Going to the student center ballroom to see Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts was a memorable experience

Front Row for Charlie Daniels band. My next door neighbor freshman year was involved in the student government. He got first pick of tickets.

The Kinks concert was definately a standout. Also memorable was a Jim Belushi show in Duke Ellington that a bomb threat came in for and they cleared us all out, only to open up the Field House for him to finish the show. Drank a beer with Belushi outside of the Field House waiting for them to get it opened up.

I hate to say it, but I was at that. Was it you, or your brother who kept yelling "Is it soup yet"?
