It's not showing great restraint. It's not showing lack of restraint. It's not relevant to the issue of restraint. It's a reflection of the difference between capabilities of the two sides. Israel has greater military capability, therefore its forces inflict more damage. Whether the 700 number reflects great restraint or not depends on the circumstances.

Hamas is clearly and openly targeting civilians indiscriminately. In their position, if they want to fight, they have no other choice. It's all they have. Israel claims that it is attacking only targets that it reasonably believes have legitimate military significance. At this point there is no evidence to the contrary. If that is in fact the case, then "great restraint" would be in fact correct.

When your own civilian population is being targeted indiscriminately, how much restraint are you reasonably expected to show in return?

Judging from your responses it already has. Which part of (paraphrasing here) "Stop launching rockets and sending suicide bombers into Israel and we aren't lobbing rockets into Palestine" don't you people understand? The latest cease-fire, which ironically contained every concession Palestine demanded and none that Israel asked for so essentially a Palestine proposal, was ignored and broken the minute it was agreed to. Hell Israel even extended that one sided agreement by 24 hours after Hamas broke it. What else would you have Israel do?

Questions that stat raise for me:
1. Do we know how many were actually 'innocent'
2. Why were the Israeli's considered 'innocent'? Considering the claims of Hamas, no Israeli is innocent
3. Were all children deemed 'innocent' because of their age? Looking around the world, and even this conflict, 'children' are trained in the use of weapons and used as soldiers and combatants. They are also used as Human Explosive Devices.
4. What would be the proper number of Israeli's killed to even up the ledger sheet? Or how many Palestinians to even out the death of those Israeli's?
5. With the decided advantage in military strength does this number show the actual ineptitude of the IDF, based on claims of their wanton desire to eliminate the Palestinian people?
6. Keeping the above claimed desire in mind, why is Hamas not trumpeting the fact that ONLY 900 Palestinian 'Innocents' had been killed. Why not trumpet this overwhelming success in protecting 'their people ' against the entire weight of IDF land sea and air power?
7. Finally in regards to numbers, is it better to use hard numbers or should we use numbers based on a percentage of population in the conflict zone.
