Idaho Vandals make a major move
So ... I have a few webcam feeds up on my desktop that refresh every few minutes. One of them is a view into LAX domestic heavy takeoff just behind Asiana Cargo superheavy loading/unloading.
Lookie what is parked over at LAX .......
I have no idea what they're doing at LAX ... but found it interesting.

The biggest "move" in academia is happening at USC (that is, the USC in LA). Could be one of the biggest ever.

He is probably referring to U$C's attempt to buy Scripps Research Institute, a highly-regarded biomedical research organization in San Diego. It looks like the discussions have a long way to go, though, and the story may have been leaked by unhappy Scripps researchers in the hope that the publicity would kill the deal. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me...story.html

It would be gigantic for USC. Scripps is one of the top research institutions in the world. It is extraordinarily highly regarded. They are located in San Diego, near UCSD and the Salk Institute, but they also have a branch in Florida by FAU.
You're talking about something along the lines of Vanderbilt or Northwestern buying something the scale of UVA's or NC State's graduate components...if their components were more highly regarded...like Ivy level.
Scripps and other independents research institutes have issues because of flat federal research funding straining their ability to operate because most of their revenue comes from grant indirects. UChicago affiliated with Woods Hole in Massachusetts last year, but Woods Hole remains independent and separate. I wouldn't be surprised to see it USC take over Scripps. However, such a direct takeover that is being bandied about is unprecedented.

It would be very difficult to ultimately pull it off. But if they somehow did, and if they could combine Scripps' annual income from research grants and donations with USC's, plus adding the research output of Scripps' faculty to that of USC, it would move USC from "top 50" worldwide as a research university (they are #47 worldwide and #33 in the US in the ARWU rankings) to perhaps "top 30" or better.

Why else would they be hiding the plane is an obscure area of the airport in the heart of P12 country? School is out. It would be more economical to put 5, or even 10 people attending conferences on commercial flights. No one would think to look for the plane at in LAX freight section.
P12 offices are in the bay area. It is ~5 hour drive or a 1 hour flight. Didn't GTS say American Eagle departs from that area? You park the school plane there. You could get an AE flight without being tracked or meet at thousands of places in LA without being noticed. Remember the fuss about Uconn president flying to Chicago?
All they need is a school from Nevada and they have a contiguous footprint.

I'm reminded of the story about TCU kissing DeLoss Dodds' ring to get his blessing for entry to the Big 12. Who are the kingmakers at UCLA and USC???

Idaho's chances of joining the PAC-12… one in a thousand?
Which is still 1,000x more likely than Boise State's chances of joining that league.

Doesn't work like that, just combining $ numbers in a way that is actually significant to real world applicability. And no one cares about the ARWU. However, it would bring a fairly significant academic prestige to USC in biomedical/health sciences (by far the largest genre of academic research endeavors) beyond anything that it currently enjoys because it is Scripps (and also extend its footprint/academic brand to San Diego and Florida).
