You cite some great classics. In particular, Bataan and Stalag 17.

Speaking of Shatner, he was in a made for TV film called Sole Survivor,
about a crashed B-24… it was actually pretty good.

And I agree about Band of Brothers. Best series ever.
In addition to all of these I'd also add Hurt Locker to this list. That was a great modern war movie.

Shatner to my knowledge was not in the 1962 release of Billy Budd in which Robert Ryan played the cruel officer. If he was in it then he was in a very small role.

Every once in a while, a director gets it right. I can relate to either film. I was there myself. Although as a sniper, my experience was a bit different than most.

I do have a funny story for you though about his service, well not during his service. My wife and I went to her hometown in PA one Memorial Day weekend where they honored several of the town's vets. Her father was one. They announced his name and stated he was a member of the Air Force's Special Forces Para-Rescue unit. After the ceremony he was walking to get in the car that would carry him through the town in a parade, this guy stopped him and began saying some surly things to him.
Basically boiled down to USAF SF guys were nothing. SF guys in the USAF were jokes. He would know, he was a Navy SEAL in 'Nam. (We both know SEALs were not the official name then). Anyway my FIL looks at him and says.. Yea I know how tough you SEAL boys are.. Too bad you can't swim, if you could I would've received a lot less medals.

I guess, depending on how you want to define war, you could add Zulu and Breaker Morant to the list. Coming back to the 20th century would also add A Bridge Too Far.

I did. It too is a great film. The ones I picked were ones that I believed would give insight into the different perspectives on the wars, or just great epic movies. There aren't many about the Korean conflict but the ones that were made all tend to be pretty good movies. A friend of the family was one of the survivors on Pork Chop Hill. He always said it was a good movie, but way to tame for the actual events. Another friend of the family fought in Sicily and again in the mountains in Italy, but for the SS, and on the opposite side from an uncle who also made the D day landing, 3rd wave, at Omaha.

We Were Soldiers
Full Metal Jacket
Gettysburg
There are others that I like, but I don't consider them must see.
this is my list plus: platoon, lone survivor, lost battalion, zero dark thirty, flags of our fathers, letters from iow jima, midway, blackhawk down, & glory.
I had considered putting Platoon on my list, but as good as it is, I don't consider it must see. I've only seen 3 of the 9 on your list (Platoon, Black Hawk Down & Glory). Also, seen bits & pieces of Midway.
TBH i think we are in a mini golden age of war movies. 4 of the ones on my list came from 2006-2013
I haven't seen either film, but is Letters from Iwo Jima a better film than Flags of our Fathers? It's what I heard when LFIJ came out.
Were those the two films where one was filmed and the director saw where he had so much footage that he then did one of them with the Japanese perspective?

By the way, like just about any war film but The Longest Day was
probably my favorite, Midway a close second.
