Virginia was never in the Metro. Virginia Tech and VCU were.

You are correct, I forgot to add Tech or VPI as they called at the time. 04-cheers

We're still called that some times. We put it on our flashback uniforms. Although since about 1991 it's VPI&SU.

Chris, I grew up in Newport News, when I left in 1971 Virginia Tech Hokies were known as VPI Gobblers. 04-cheers

I can say with absolute certainty that it was already VPI & SU by 1980.

RE: Divisionless at 5 rivals
Virginia Tech has had four legal names since its founding in 1872:

1872--Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC)

1886--Va. Agricultural and Mechanical College & Polytechnic Institute (VMAC&PI)

people then began calling the school "VPI" so the Virginia State Legislature officially changed the school's name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in 1944.

In 1970 the State Legislature sanctioned university status for VPI and gave it its present legal name Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU).

When I graduated from Tech in 1972, the terms "VPI" and "Gobblers" were commonly used. I still have articles of furniture and clothing with those names on them however I believe it is impossible today to find anything new for sale with the name "VPI" attached as the University promotes "Virginia Tech" as the official school brand.

Oh, you don't like Miami and VT? I'm sure someone will take them off your hands for you...

What, and give up our epic grudge matches against North Carolina State and Virginia? No sale! Why would we give up such choice match ups for teams that we actually have some shared history and our fans actually care about? That makes no sense.

We'll take what we're given and we'll like it. We wouldn't want to be seen as trouble makers to our new BFFs. And if we have to move heaven and earth to protect everyone else in the league's third and fourth biggest games at the expense of what would be our biggest games then so be it.

We well understand that we're lucky to be here at all. After all, the ACC could have taken UConn or Cincinnati or the University of Phoenix or really anyone other than Pitt and been just fine. They did us a huge favor when they plucked us from obscurity and did so basically out of the kindness of their blessed little hearts. There were no financial considerations whatsoever, just divine providence from Swofford and company. Thank goodness for their generosity.

So just give us you you deem fit and we'll gladly take them without hesitation or a hint of resentment. Hopefully our dozens of fans who show up to watch Pitt/Wake Forest or some schitt like that won't offend them in any way. They are royalty and we their mere subjects.

What was the point of adding "university?" The label itself is kind of meaningless, no?

institution, college, & university all have different meanings.

a university is a collection of colleges and is thus more prestigious.

"University" was added to "Virginia Polytechnic Institute" to more accurately reflect the changed character of the school that took place under the leadership of Virginia Tech President T. Marshall Hahn. When Dr. Hahn became president in 1962, VPI was a largely military, white male technical institute with a focus on agriculture and engineering.

When Dr. Hahn left in 1975, Virginia Tech had more than tripled in size to become a coed, multi-racial research university with a thriving college of arts and sciences and extensive graduate programs. VT recently opened a school of medicine and is today a Top 40 research university.

LOL

Glad to have Pitt in the ACC. A bunch of us (less than a dozen) Duke fans were planning to come up for the first football game at Pitt this coming season and we wouldn't have offended you in any way either (unless you are offended by too many questions about how to put french fries in sandwiches). But unfortunately the game was scheduled November 1, so all the parents (including me) who don't want to miss trick-or-treating bailed. We might see you in 2016.

RE: Divisionless at 5 rivals
So if people want to get rivalries correct they should probably at least follow a list of rivalries:
from wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Co...#Rivalries

Boston College Clemson Battle For The Leather Helmet O'Rourke-McFadden Trophy
Boston College Miami (FL) — —
Boston College Syracuse Boston College–Syracuse football rivalry —
Boston College Virginia Tech —
Clemson Florida State Clemson–Florida State rivalry —
Clemson Georgia Tech Clemson–Georgia Tech football rivalry —
Clemson North Carolina State Textile Bowl —
Clemson Virginia — —
Duke Maryland — —
Duke North Carolina Carolina-Duke rivalry Victory Bell
Duke North Carolina State — —
Duke Wake Forest — —
Florida State Miami (FL) Miami–Florida State football rivalry —
Florida State Virginia — Jefferson-Eppes Trophy
Georgia Tech Virginia Tech Battle of the Techs —
Maryland North Carolina State — —
Maryland Syracuse — —
Maryland Virginia Maryland–Virginia football rivalry —
Miami (FL) Virginia Tech — —
North Carolina North Carolina State Carolina-NC State rivalry —
North Carolina Virginia South's Oldest Rivalry —
North Carolina Wake Forest Carolina–Wake rivalry —
North Carolina State Wake Forest — —
Pittsburgh Syracuse — —
Virginia Virginia Tech Virginia-Virginia Tech rivalry Commonwealth Cup

Replace Maryland with Louisville and go from there to get something that actually works for everyone.
