Divisionless at 5 rivals
So ... I tweaked my rivalmaker to go to five permanent rivals.

The good:
- You get to play more of who you want
- Maintains scheduling ease similar to the 3 rivals, 5 rotate split
- You play less of who you don't want ... which *is* a benefit to most in the conference, platitudes of "cohesiveness" aside.

The bad:
- If somebody isn't in your 5, you won't see them very much

Here's what I came up with:

Miami: FSU, UNC, VT, UofL, BC
FSU: Miami, GT, Clemson, Wake, VT
GT: FSU, Clemson, UNC, Duke, UVA
Clemson: FSU, GT, NCST, Wake, VT

UNC: Miami, GT, NCST, Duke, UVA
NCST: Clemson, UNC, Duke, Wake, Pitt
Wake: FSU, Clemson, NCST, Duke
Duke: GT, UNC, NCST, Wake, Cuse

UVA: FSU, GT, UNC, VT, Pitt
VT: Miami, Clemson, UVA, UofL, Cuse
UofL: Miami, VT, Pitt, BC, Cuse
Pitt: NCST, UVA, UofL, BC, Cuse

BC: Miami, Wake, UofL, Pitt, Cuse
Cuse: Duke, VT, UofL, Pitt, BC

Now I *think* that covers every most desirable opponent except for maybe UofL-FSU and Wake-UNC.

Typo putting VT as one of FSU's rivals (actually UVA). And I agree with Pitt having **** rivals.

And 3 games for 8 opponents is a lot better than 1 game for 6 opponents.

While I enjoyed playing Pitt and Syracuse in the Big East I don't see UofL being thrilled with that arrangement. As has been mentioned, I don't think you'd hear much complaining even though we'd be the only non-NC school to not see at least 1 of FSU, Miami, VT, or Clemson. The North Carolina schools are happy playing the old guard but Louisville would love to have one permanent rival that is traditionally a power.

we have more of a history with them from before you were in bigeast. For cuse after BC, pit and Louisville either Miami or Virginia tech would be next on our list of desirables.

I swapped BC- LOU and FSU-Virg for FSU-LOU and BC-Virg to appease Louisville since I figure of the 4 neither matchups is a must .

there really is no better way to do it. And there is someone who already did exactly did what GTS did on a 3/5 setup

RE: Divisionless at 5 rivals
GTS, appreciate the work. But it seems like Coastal schools are pu**ies and have put their foot down. They want divisions because they're afraid their programs aren't strong enough to ever play for conference titles otherwise. If divisions were actually voted out, then some version of the 3/5, 4/4 or 5/3 is the only way to go. The 3/5 makes the most sense geometrically, but a 4th or 5th school will be needed to satisfy everyones' wants.

Anyways, if divisions must remain, there was a great discussion in a past thread on how to keep divisions without playing every team in your division each year. Hokie Mark pictorially demonstrated a rough conclusion with:

And he added:

Quote:ASSUME:
Can't change divisions
Can't change crossovers
Have to keep protected rivalries within divisions
Have to play every team home and home in 4 years

You can just take the best team from each division and voila!

EX:
Years #1 and #2, BC plays Syracuse, Wake, Clemson, Louisville, Va Tech, UNC, Pitt, and Miami.
Years #3 and #4, BC plays Syracuse, Wake, FSU, NC State, Va Tech, Ga Tech, Virginia, and Duke.

We could really make this thing simple if we just went to an 8, 9 or ten team conference.
We could go back to round-robin play and everybody is happy.

RE: Divisionless at 5 rivals
regarding 5/3 vs 3/5

having 5 fixed rivals seems insane IMO. You are forcing way too many rivalries that are not real rivalries with this setup. for every rivalry you add that further keeps other non rivaled teams from playing.

if you use the 3 fixed rivalries every ACC team is guaranteed to play each other 2x in a 4 year period.

Y'all keep on with this and we're gonna need a "College Realignment" board for the ACCbbs forum :)
/sarcasm

E4E's recommendation: No divisions and 3 permanent rivals.
