A division with UConn, Temple, USF, UCF, and ECU is a close you can get to replicating the Big East in terms of geography in competitive play for UC. Northeast schools, Mid-Atlantic school with big fan base, and two Florida schools is about as good as gets for UC. Now we need the American and UC to generate some more revenue but that is a story for another day. From a branding perspective and competition standpoint, I actually prefer UC in that division over anything that looks like the Big Texas Division.
I'd say the AAC East is on par with the Big East.
I wouldn't. UCONN, temple, ECU and UCF are nowhere near Louisville, WVU, Pitt and Syracuse.
agreed
Pitt with the exception of one season and Syracuse were absolute garbage. Now I'm not saying UCF is the equivalent of Louisville yet (theyre probably one or two season out), but I think we're on par with WVU circa 2006-2009 with expectations now. Its not THAT far off from what we faced yearly in the OBE.
Syracuse was garbage (they averaged one conference win a season from 2005-2012), but Pitt had three seasons during that stretch were they won 8,9 and 10 games. The rest of the seasons they hovered the .500 mark. They weren't great but I think saying they were garbage is harsh. Classic underachievers for sure.
#1 is right though, it is about brand recognition than on field success and Pitt, WVU and Syracuse have it in spades over these new schools.

Yes, UC, UCF, Houston, ECU, SMU and Navy are solid football teams and this conference is probably comparable to the old Big East. That's fine, but there is one BIG difference, No auto bid. That's what made the Big East. There is a bright side though, if UC was still in the old Big East it likely would take a 10-2 or 11-1 season to win it and get the auto bid anyways and if they do that now they would likely get the at large bid so a great season will most likely get the same end result.

comparable to the big east in actual overall team quality (on field), yes
not comparable to big east in brand recognition/image/national perception
and as you say...no auto bid
oh, and the AAC bowl line ups suck vs the Big easts as well
really there is not comparison....

I think, the brand got a little cred with BCS Bowl victory, 3rd round draft pick and two basketball championships...

Is there an AAC championship game this year? Or does that start next year?

The ACC is only at 11 this year. The 1st championship game will be next year when Navy joins the fold. The championship game will be held at the home site of the highest ranked AAC team.

Hopefully, that will be the newly renovated Nippert Stadium. Unless, of course, we are in one of the P5 conferences by then.
