I wouldn't mind playing Maryland more often (good for recruiting plus usually a VT win - except last year - yeesh!)

Tennessee are a bunch of sissies for avoiding VT!

Looking at your map the only logical move for the ACC would be to add West Virginia and South Carolina as long as Notre Dame is going to stay semi-independent.

You have a very, very strange fascination with SoCar.

Maybe.
I would like to add another "southern" school to the league and 'lil carolina is the best "fit" of any school in our footprint.
Up until the time that the ACC added Syracuse and Pitt, the state of North Carolina had been the fulcrum of the conference, now that pivot point has moved north, I'm just advocating moving it a little further south.

But by taking South Carolina? That does nothing.

You have to admit that our choices below the state of North Carolina are very, very limited.

And what exactly do we have to entice South Carolina to leave the SEC?

Sure, but that doesn't really help explain anything.
  • Who the hell actually cares if North Carolina isn't the geographic center of the conference? Meaning, what is the point of adding a school just for the sake of adjusting geography? There's no tangible benefit from that.
  • If options are limited, why choose the worst one of the limited-bunch? Tennessee, Georgia and Florida are all significantly better schools.

RE: McMurphy: ACC considering playing other ACC schools as OOC games
Since some are posting pictures, here's one using the same 200- and 300-mile radius and the schools located within. However, only schools that FSU doesn't face regularly are shown.

Something seems out of place.

THIS. If there is a true home run to pair with ND it is TN. It fits in every way.

I would also add all this jank "conference as OOC game" garbage is easily remedied by geographic divisions and a 16 team conference.

Miami
Florida State
Clemson
Georgia Tech

North Carolina
NC State
Wake Forest
Duke

Tennessee
Louisville
Virginia
Virginia Tech

Syracuse
Boston College
Pittsburgh
Notre Dame

The map of the footprint of the conference wouldn't be sexy ... but the pods are all rock solid and allow for easy scheduling where you get a little of everything on the eastern seaboard. You play your pod (3). You have a permanent rival in the other pods (3). You rotate through the non-rivals in the other pods (3).

It's beautiful. It's simple. It's easy to understand. It makes everybody happy with the possible exception of the French who still get what they really want anyway (VT/UNC). It strengthens regional ties and rivalries. It increases attendance. It increases revenue. It increases TV interest.

SO OF COURSE WE WON'T BE HAVING ANY OF THAT. 03-bored

When Tennessee is ready to leave the SEC, let us know.
In the meanwhile, let's make the best of what we have ('cause it ain't changing for a little bit)

RE: McMurphy: ACC considering playing other ACC schools as OOC games
I'm pretty sure an SEC school is Not going to leave the conference. Why would they. The payouts are too big to leave. WVU is locked up in a Gore like We are. SO, That leaves Cincinnati as a school that is ready to step up. You already know Them. They are in that "Circle of Trust" and can move in a little over a years time. Close by for scheduling, very easy for fans to drive to. Hotels and entertainment and Major Amusement parks for the rest of the Family to take in. Good Football and Basketball to boot. The rest are Fantasy including ND full time barring a miracle.

Whomever said it was a good way for the NC schools to face each other more often might have it right.

Most of the comments on the VT boards are disappointed we didn't go to 9 games.

I'm not sure how popular scheduling an ACC opponent as "ooc" would be. I'm sure somehow it'll be spun as a cop-out or small-time by our rivals. If they sell it right most people would be in favor of it. We used to play Clemson, Wake, and NCSU more before we joined the ACC.

I would be in favor of going to 11 conference games.

Then schedule ACC teams OOC. Just don't force the legit football schools to have to do it too.

This is great except Tennessee and Notre Dame are not coming. So, swap UCONN for ND and Cincy for Tennessee. Would the football schools be okay with those pods? I can see where VT might not like it. Maybe swap one newcomer for WVU should they ever become available.

And instead of your play format, assign the pods into two divisions on a rotating three year schedule. That's 7 division games. So, add one permanent rival in each POD and play them every year. That adds two games for a total of nine games.

1. Preserves division championship format.
2. Teams will have 5 permanent games per year to work with for playing the teams they want to play.

Or we could just stand pat for now and see how the new playoff system works out.

RE: McMurphy: ACC considering playing other ACC schools as OOC games
ACC vs ACC really only makes sense for certain schools....in particular the NC ones. It's ridiculous for NC State and Duke to be 30 mins apart and never play each other. I believe fans would rather see that game instead of either one playing Kansas or Indiana.

Clemson, FSU, GT should always be exempt from this due to their SEC rival games. I would count Louisville, but Kentucky isn't scaring anybody these days.

I don't recall seeing it being mandatory. It just means its an option to play another ACC team as the P5 ooc game. If the school doesn't want to schedule the game, then don't. But then you can't complain about not playing someone because you have the option to play them.

That's bs. Playing GT OOC in a game that doesn't count in the standings is not nearly the same as getting them every year in conference play.

What this does is gives a lazy "solution" to some of these teams not playing because the divisions are so ass backwards and this stupid conference doesn't know how to enhance its football product.

FSU doesnt need more ACC games. They need those OOC games to help their strength of schedule since beyond a few select teams, this conference is garbage in football.

You are talking the difference in swapping BC or Cuse for GT vs swapping Notre Dame or Oklahoma St for GT. Pretty big difference there.

And a conference that does its job shouldn't have to have teams scheduling OOC to play each other. These should be solved with logical divisions and/or setups. FSU shouldn't have to bend over backwards to play the closest team to them in the conference while getting both BC and Syracuse every season.

If the only pair that we could expand with is UConn and Cincinnati, then we might as well stay at 14 forever.

The B1G is considering the same thing so it's not just the ACC. I agree with you that FSU shouldn't need to schedule another ACC team (I don't think this is for FSU). The problem with the ACC is they have too many schools where the main rival sits in another conference (same as the SEC). It is next to impossible to please everyone with any kind of set up. This generally helps schools who want to play others inside the conference more...Duke and NC State are obvious choices there.

If the conf championship game is deregulated then this all will most likely be moot. The ACC at that point can schedule however they want.

RE: McMurphy: ACC considering playing other ACC schools as OOC games
Who in the SEC has their main rival in the other division? The SEC is set up logically unlike the ACC with their horrible divisional setup. The ACC is the only conference with non geographical divisions. And the stupid zipper isnt even logical. Virginia/Virginia Tech and BC/Syracuse should be in separate divisions if it were a true zipper.

We all know why that hasn't happened. UNC/UVA/Duke wouldnt like it.

Again, you don't have to swap anybody for anybody. This is a solution for those that want to play a team they only see twice every 6 years.
