Pat Dye transferred quite well into the role of Coach emeritus where he actually carries out many of the social functions that head coaches once had to take out personal time to handle. So Dye became a spokesperson for the university and took some heat off of the other coaches in the process. Beamer could easily transition into such a position and would be wonderful at doing such.
Sounds good... but who would VT get to replace him?
Jim McElwain or Rich Rod. Pickings are pretty slim right now.
Can you imagine what Mountaineer fans would have to say if Rich Rod led the Hokies against them in 2017?

RE: Is it time for Frank Beamer to step down?
VT has now gone 3-straight seasons with 8 or less wins, after winning 10+ the 8 seasons prior, and stretches of 11 of 13 and 13 of 17 years with 10+ wins prior to this skid. None of those other seasons were as bad, record-wise, as this year, and one of those seasons was a 9-win season back during 11-game regular seasons.
So VT has literally as many 8-win or less seasons these last 3 years as the previous 17 combined.
Obviously Beamer is done. He's just not a good coach anymore. He doesn't make the right hiring decisions. He doesn't recruit like he used to. It's over.
With that said, he made VT. He should be allowed to coach forever. When he tells you he wants to retire, that's when he retires. You can't get rid of him. It'd be a disgraceful thing to do and an embarrassment to your university.

I believe he is just remembering the years that VT had better records than FSU because Bowden stayed on too long and the school let him. He just figures that turnaround is fair play, IMO.

I'm just saying what EVERYBODY said when we were trying to figure out how to part ways with Bowden. Sounds stupid as hell, don't it?

Take Jim McElwain off the list for VT. He has a $7.5 million dollar buy out.

"McElwain is under contract through the 2018 season, makes a base salary of $1.5 million a year with raises throughout, and has a $7.5 million buyout."

Even if he only had one year remaining on his contract, his buyout is $7.5M? Because vt doesn't appear to be looking for a new coach for another season or two.

The coaching carousel is beginning to pick up speed. I find it interesting that, except for VaTech, Bud Foster's name is never mentioned as a candidate for a HC position despite his stellar record as a DC. It makes me wonder whether Beamer will pull a Dean Smith and wait until summer to announce his retirement, virtually forcing Tech to go to his loyal assistant (ala Bill Guthridge).
