RE: How many people donate to your athletics fund?
No matter how small it is the most important thing you can do for your sports programs...
donate
buy season tickets
Go look at the top schools and while they get millions from the conference they make twice to three times that on tickets and donations. We can't control the TV dollars but no one other than our self is stopping us from donating
Going up to the window and buying a ticket at every home game is great but you build your program on season tickets. Don't look for anything out of it other than a investment in the program.

Questions: Where did you find that graphic, and from what year is it?
Comments:
1) Within the last 3 years when UTSA finally got a football team, our contributions have increased significantly, and I expect to see a continued rise in the coming years as our program continues to grow.
2) Such graphics aren't fair to smaller schools such as Rice because there are far fewer graduates, hence far less money in contributions to the athletic programs, so I'm curious as to what the numbers are per capita.

It's for this year and it's a chart in our HAF packet

Anyway, I would probably feel better if more people were on the same team. As the chart above shows none of us are really breaking the bank in this area. I would really like to try to understand if there is a way to move this needle especially in the mid-state of Tennesee. There is so much freaking money in that area - particularly in the counties that border Nashville and damn near all of them (well at least a large majority) who went to college are Middle Tennessee grads. How do we get them involved more? This is one area we could do so much better in...just not sure what is the best way to do it.
A change in leadership ? How about our Foundation -- are they doing all that they can do, or are they just collecting a paycheck ?
I'd like to have Bill Lansden back (at UAB now). Great guy.

RE: How many people donate to your athletics fund?
I have found that here in this area, the "average" Joe plumber, etc, is a fan of the UT-obknoxiousville "arnge" team.
Blue Raider fans are made up of almost exclusively graduates, plus some college-educated folks who have moved into town from elsewhere.
We have a very difficult time getting the Wal-Mart fan.
I have some relatives-- 5 of them in a family-- none of them graduated from college--- they wear their orange from head-to-toe on gamedays, and send money to Knoxville. Pisses me off royally, but I still luv 'em.
We bought them MT football season tickets for the family probably 5 years in a row, they came to our games at first, but we finally stopped giving the tickets to them (when they stopped showing).
I'm afraid it's a losing battle. Around here, the kids are brainwashed "arnge" from birth.
We are lucky that the "vawls" have been awful recently. But they won't stay down forever.

The only thing I do to contribute is buy season tickets and sell raffle tickets for the team fund raisers. Actual money goes to other more need causes. Life doesn't end if there's no sports but it may if there's no food. Just saying.

My daughter is currently attending UTEP so I guess you could say I'm giving them thousands.

Do you really think there's much risk of anyone in the US going hungry? I'm not questioning your overall point, just that particular concern.

It's like that everywhere. The only way out is to get into a real conference. Otherwise, people will just think you're a lunatic for refusing to "go with the flow." I've fought it for almost 25 years, and it's a losing battle... unless you've got an AD who admits these things and commits to getting into a real conference. Louisville and TCU had that, and now their fans aren't perceived as weirdos and actually get together and have fun. USM got close... very close... in the late 1990s, but ultimately we were hamstrung by our own administration, which was drawn from the beer-at-lunch bunch and the CUSA-a-ok brigade.

Oh yes. There's a lot of people in need of food. Even in our church we need a food pantry. Then there's the Salvation Army, the Rescue Mission, etc.

Many universities have food pantries, as well. I know that we do.

Chart is obviously questionable. NT does not give out these numbers and being you have to donate like many places to get prime football seats, the presented numbers are not even close.
NT has a long way to go in fund raising, as do most of CUSU. I just caution anyone who believes most stats released by most colleges. Athletic budgets, fundraising, test scores, graduate salaries, attendance; just about ever school reports differently and almost all are favorable slanted if not worse.

USM had a good shot to hire TCU's AD but opted for Mr Mumbles. Now TCU's AD is president of the Carolina Panthers.

Yeah the problem is the full PC member numbers have remained stagnant for over a decade. With the explosion of the SPC in recent years our full members should realistically have grown much more than they have. What has been done with the SPC has been remarkable since when even I started at ECU in 2004, but we haven't turned that into a marked increase in PC members.

Marshall has been milking to same core fans for 20-30 years. ugh!
Wait! are you saying, if you are a Big Green member ("same core fans for 20-30 yrs") your not going to die! Where do I get an application!!

I think La Tech wins this hands down. The state of Louisiana population is about 4.6 million, all of which combined cover half or more of La Techs annual athletic expenses through taxpayer subsidies. They are Techs cash cow. This subsidy last fiscal year was over $9mil. Sure wish USM had a cow like that to milk.

I've talked with Mr. Morrison 3-4 times in the past 2 years tailgating before games. Always seems to find his way over to our lot to shake hands. Very genuine and intelligent guy.
