What they do violates the principle of non aggression. It is destruction of property. They should be held accountable for every machine they destroy. If it takes the rest of their lives to make those they harmed whole again? fine.
The flaw in our current system is that the victims of crime are rarely compensated in the process. Putting someone in jail for property destruction is does nothing for the victim. In a paradigm where the victim could demand compensation they could even indenture a criminal to "work off" their debt as punishment or force that labor to be done in chains if necessary. This would be true justice IMO.

What would you do
Kentucky uses $10/day as a restitution rate for those who can't pay fines - someone who does $1 million in damage would be locked up for life at even double that rate

Why lock them up and make the victims again be victimized by having to pay for their incarceration? Make them slaves to those they harmed if necessary.
Sounds crazy...right?

It's not the victim who is paying. If someone's found guilty of an offense in KY and can't pay the fine, the convict's jail sentence is proportional i the unpaid amount of the fine.

I don't understand. The victims are not taxpayers? I'm missing something evidently.
