Brian Alunan need to pick up some shifts bussing or waiting tables at Outback or selling shoes at Footlocker and get the F out of the house. Parents of the millennials are enabling all this. There may not be many resume enhancing job opportunities, but at least if you can get out and gain experience in managing responsibilities, you can get a leg up on the competition. This guy is less hirable than someone graduating in May. He hasn't had a responsible regiment in at least 7 years.

Hell *make* a job if you cant find one... Memorial day is coming up, find a big fireworks show, get a permit to vend, and sell glow in the dark necklaces... Set up a DBA, go on craigstlist and offer up home computer repair and network services at bargain basement prices.

Get any money you can, and any experience you can. This needs to start in HS...

Hell I have had a job since I was 10 years old and at many times in my adolescent life I had 2 jobs. My sister did the same.

I never got an allowance and seldom got money for anything from mom and dad. The big exception to that was when I worked all summer to save up money for a trip to China and came in 1 grand short... My parents gave me 2K (which I later found out came from their retirement).. 1K to cover the cost and 1K because they were proud of how hard I had worked, never asking them for a dime towards the trip.

My girls get a token allowance (1$ per month per year old). They have to tithe 10% and save 10%. The rest is theirs to spend as they like so that, hopefully, they learn about delayed gratification (my 8 yo gets it, the 7yo not so much).

I swear parents today are so focused on everything except teaching the basic boring life skills.

Could my kid be stuck living with me at 29? Maybe.... Will I be ok with them sitting around sending out resumes rather than making work? no..
Gotta have money to make money sometimes. Getting product to sell and permits is not free.

Advertising on craigslist is mostly a miss unless you're selling sex.

He has a car which means he has gas money, or his parents have money for gas..

a DBA is about 15$ to set up and your local library will let you post on craigslist for free. Really the DBA is optional, I would just get it for the purposes of making a resume look good. If you set up a DBA and set up home networks for 5-10$ a pop on craigslist you can have on your resume "Millennial Tech: Lead <role>" where role could be whatever field you're looking to get into.. After all you are the lead accountant, network engineer, publicity and social media expert.

Glow in the dark necklaces go for about 1.50 a pop wholesale on the internet. They sell at events for 3-5$ and permits *usually* run in the 20$ range per person.

If the kid (or his parents) pay a cell phone bill then there is enough money for this.. You might fail 50 times but at least its doing something other than sending out resumes which are looking worse and worse each day...

Alunan is 29, and lives with his parents. His work history is spotty. His unemployment benefits have ended. The bank is about to take his car.

If every generation is supposed to be better off financially than the one that proceeded it, Sacramento “millennials” have a lot of catching up to do.

Several experts said the economy is the primary culprit. Many millennials graduated from high school or college during the Great Recession and had trouble finding work. Others were just getting started as professionals and were the first laid off during the economic downturn

Seems they could have given some more detail on the bolded part. I mean, THAT could be the reason he can't find the job, not just a crappy economy.

I just looked on ebay and you can get a lot of 1,000 glow sticks for $40. Sell them for $1 a piece, which is actually a good deal at an event and you can make about $900 after buying a $50 permit. Good idea, Bull. I may do that myself.

I made quite a bit of money in HS doing that for someone else (cause he purchased all the stock, permits, and drove us to events. We sold them for 3$ each and I made 75 cents on each sale... There were nights where I made hundreds of dollars at a single show.

I'm thinking about doing that for my girls this year... They are just a little young but we always watch the 4th fireworks near a parking garage way off the fair grounds.

If I bought a few hundred I could walk round with them and let them try to sell.
It build confidence, salesmanship, and increases the speed a kid does math in their heads.

Another thing that friends of mine have used to make money off of craigslist: password recovery for PCs. Herins boot cd is some big secret to the public and you can charge 20-ish dollars a person. It's also good for virus removal.

It may seem comical but it's a very real problem.

I think a lot of it is the "special snowflake" syndrome.

I would like to see the same article, but with added information on what types of college degrees are being earned by those in Sacramento unable to find jobs.

Math, engineering, science, computer sciences... these types of degrees will get employers knocking on your door. Liberal arts, sociology, history, philosophy, English, any racial- or gender-based studies... not so much.

And therein lies the rub. Maybe music or history is your passion and it makes sense that if you're looking for something to do 40-50 hours per week until you reach your 60s, it oughta be something you love. But the opportunities are fleeting and salaries low.

Most probably have general business degrees. Liberal Arts are a minority of kids.

As a millennial (born in 1983), I look around at the people I grew up with and see that there is a clear dividing line that has been exacerbated by the recession and "recovery". Either they have emerged in strong and growing careers and have seen their income increase dramatically over the past five years, or they're struggling to keep their heads above water. There doesn't appear to be much middle ground.

Unemployment rates for some liberal arts degrees are pretty low.

History and English degrees do considerably better than gender-based, racial-based, sociology, or psychology/philosophy majors.

Those degrees usually jump into teaching while the others, well, I'm not really sure what they're used for. A wall ornament I guess.

History degrees actually have a better mid-career salary than general business degrees.

I have a history degree, but I work in marketing. Marketing requires a lot of research and writing, so a history degree is a pretty good fit.
