That's no way to find work if you really want it bad enough.

As far as appearances are concerned, strictly online seems to be the ONLY way to apply for something. I'm not aware if a paper application exists anymore.

We used to have a few on hand, but it's not like we've ever hired in big numbers.

BS.... I've dedicated entire days to driving around to every engineering / surveying company in Raleigh-Durham (and in Greenville while at ECU) area looking for work in person. I've landed a decent job with benefits that way 3 times. You'd be surprised how far that kind of gumption goes with folks that are doing the hiring.

How long ago was this?

I never said that this never happened it's just that the copious job sites + the companies that just say "apply online", it could appear that way. Not making excuses, I already have a job.

It doesn't matter what the website says. Kids need to get this nonsense out of their heads. Half the time that crap isn't even kept up to date.

Oh I agree. If I could afford it, I'd start a PR campaign about it.

RE: No job, no house, no kids: Welcome to the millennials
The key is that you're willing to do work that you might not like. And being married I've tried to make money by selling shoes and boots from a catalog company. I didn't get any takers as they were a little step and people are cheap when that is concerned.

I've also have gone door to door trying to sell manure for people's grasses. I got maybe a couple of takers. Again, people wanted it spread also for what I was selling it for. I would get kidded at work and some guy told me I took a stab at everything and never hitting anything either. BUT. At least I was TRYING.

Heck, if you want to make money easy there's a lot of ways, just have a garage sale. I'll bet that kid could get 200 bucks a month just doing that alone. Deliver Pizza. Work at a 7-11 (they're always looking for workers). Work at Lowes, or Home Depot. Deliver newspapers. Be a crossing guard. Mow lawns (everyone hates to mow their own lawns). That job is easy to get but hard to do. My neighbor saw my yard and told me to be his gardener and that he'd pay me well. Thanks to God I don't need to do this type of work at all but by golly if I had to I'd would have been more than happy to do it. For him and anyone else that wanted to hire me.

One only needs to WANT to work. That's the magic word.

Finding a job and being happy isn't an exact science. Some seasons of life will no doubt suck. I think Millenials have unrealistic expectations because they're from the participant trophy generation of people constantly stroked by everyone around them.

And also being rewarded for failing... Oh your ball team placed last with zero wins... Here's your trophy for "Team With Best Effort."

It doesn't reward getting something for nothing. Whatever happened to earning things? Prizes, jobs, scholarships, wins, diplomas, degrees, etc...

When I played baseball, we were short one guy because half the team had caught a stomach virus. I played left and center field. We still destroyed the other team. Had we lost then it would have been tough shiit. People are just poosies these days, that's all there is to it. Thanks liberals.

I grew up in this generation and never got a participation trophy. Never seen one in real life honestly.

Even in marching band comps, the little trophy you got for coming was usually left at some rest stop on the way back home.

How old are you? My nephew has gotten trophies for as long as he's played ball. I know he started tee ball in 2005. It's just ridiculous and teaches nothing. I've spoken with you before though, and you're a different breed from the rest. You haven't been coddled.

RE: No job, no house, no kids: Welcome to the millennials
As usual, you can't paint an accurate picture of millennials with a single brush stroke. However, I will say that there are a select few that have never had it hard. I know one guy that graduated in December with me who's still unemployed. He's never worked a job in his life, and thinks he's above working in the trenches while he hunts for a big boy job.

At the same time, I know plenty of millennials who've worked since they were legally allowed to. I'd say there are a lot more of us that don't feel like we're above washing dishes or flipping burgers. It just so happens that the whiners get airtime.

By the way, have any of you tried (recently) to live completely on your own working one of these jobs?

I think paper applications are probably non-existent now. When I apply for a job, I go to their site and attach my resume. I applied for Dunkin Donuts when they built a store in Bossier City, just for some part time or weekend work, and those bastards told me I was over qualified, even for regional managing. I know the douchepickle in this story could get a job like that.

I got trophies for soccer and football just for playing... in the '80s.

RE: No job, no house, no kids: Welcome to the millennials
It's true that you can't live OFF of this jobs but at least you'll have a bit of self respect that you were able to pay for your car and gas instead of having mom and pop do it for you. Sometimes it is necessary for your parents to help you out temporarily but it's downright wrong for them to support you.

My brother in law is one of those that doesn't work and he gets money from the government and his sister. He has bi-polarism but that's just a cop out as I'm sure there are many in the work field that have that and yet are working. I keep my nose out of it as he hasn't asked me to help support him so it's none of my business. He's almost fifty and I think he has only worked less than two years and that was because his brother hired him. And when his mother dies he'll probably inherit her house because no one wants him to live with them either. It's pathetic. But he's got it made.

Not me... Only if we made it to the playoffs. If not, you hope for better next year. My football team sucked so I never got my football trophy. Also, in school, we'd get a red ribbon for the A honor roll, and a blue one for the B honor roll. You just had to excel somewhat to get rewarded. Now not so much. Just sit the bench of the losing team and you're good.

Well he IS pretty old... I lived at my parents when I was 32, but only for 5 months while I looked for a house. Other than that, I'd been gone since I was 21.

26. Even though I was raised middle class, my parents weren't. They've just started to get comfortable. I got allowance maybe 4 times in my life, so even that is a concept that's somewhat foreign to me.

Then I went to ECU, a school that isn't really filled with the entitled. It seemed like everyone was in Teaching Fellows, work-study, or had off campus jobs.

I moved back with my parents when I went reserve before the semester started. I love them to death, but you never realize how many annoying little things your parents do until you move back home.

RE: No job, no house, no kids: Welcome to the millennials
There is a misconception about the whole trophy thing. Yes we got them but the teams that won got bigger ones. Regardless of outcome, our effort was acknowledged (just not as much recognition as the team that actually won the damn thing). That rewarding of effort regardless of outcome has bleed into the way that millennials write their resumes. Now they're quickly realizing that nobody cares how much effort you put in. The only thing that matters is the impact you made. Why is today different because the work you did yesterday? Until they can actually answer that question, they're going to struggle in the job market.

Lmao! I know exactly what you mean... I bought a house 5 doors down from my parents, about 3/4ths of a mile, and go over there all the time, but can leave and come home any time I want to...

But he's got it made.

i've never understood this idea that working some crappy job for the sake of working is somehow tied to your worth as a person...I've never felt some great self respect for working a cash register or sweeping floors...I simply did it for the little $$$ I was paid, nothing more.

Dude lives with his parents... Flipping boigaz is fine for him.

Sure, but I'm talking to the people who say millenials need to get out of their parent's homes.

Well he IS pretty old... I lived at my parents when I was 32, but only for 5 months while I looked for a house. Other than that, I'd been gone since I was 21.

I moved back with my parents when I went reserve before the semester started. I love them to death, but you never realize how many annoying little things your parents do until you move back home.

Pretty sure they probably felt the exact same towards you.
