Marshall Gunning Hard For Mike D'Antoni
Considering the source (Chuck Landon) I don't know if I really believe this article. But if this is true and Marshall has not been in contact with these coaches or any of the rumored coaches then either we are taking a huge risk of being left holding the bag or Mike D'Antoni will be Marshall's next MBB coach.
One big smokescreen.
In reality, that is what Marshall’s nearly month-long search for a new head basketball coach has been.
Murry Bartow?
The East Tennessee State coach revealed Thursday that he hasn’t talked to anyone at Marshall and is not pursuing the job.
Mike Young?
The veteran Wofford coach told sources he never has been involved with the Marshall vacancy.
Steve Henson?
The Oklahoma assistant coach, who once worked under Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick at UNLV, says he and Hamrick never talked about this job.
Jeff Neubauer?
Apparently, there was contact between Marshall and the Eastern Kentucky coach at some point during the last 28 days, but Neubauer is out of the mix now.
Who does that leave?
Just a whole lot of smoke and a guy who used to wear No. 10 around here.
Mike D’Antoni.

First of all, D'Antoni is still currently employed by the LA Lakers.
Secondly, he'll likely have his pick of NBA jobs next season if he's fired in LA.
Yes, I realize he is a Marshall alumnus... but there is zero chance a big-name NBA coach still in his coaching prime making $4M per year is going to pack up and move to Huntington, WV to coach a middle of the pack team in a non-major conference.
Being optimisitic and hopeful is fine... but this is lunacy.

He wanted the job back around 2003 when Jirsa was hired or 2007 when Donnie was hired. Even though he said he wanted it our brilliant AD at the time, Bob Marcum refused to entertain the idea.

If MD is fired by the Lakers, he will be MU's next coach. If not, it will be Moton from UNCC. JMO.
If he is fired, they will pay him 4 Mil. He doesn't need the money anyway. MU will pay him around 600K plus house and car, charter flights for the team and private jet for him to use. He will likely get a house in Huntington and his wife will stay in LA. Happens all the time.
Larry Brown did it at SMU and that program was arguably in worse shape when he took it over than what Marshall's is now.

We didn't wait this long to name a coach for it not to be D'Antoni. If he wasn't going to take the job he would have told Hamrick and we would've made another selection by now.
Pending his termination from the Lakers, he's Huntington bound IMO.

He's getting older. His parents still live in the area and are very old. May just want to come home.
He'll get another $4 million from the Lakers after he is fired, so it's not like he'll be hurting for money.
Wouldn't be surprised if Marshall put together a pretty lucrative contract for him if he is indeed the coach. I imagine it'll be far greater than what previous coaches have made.

I'm not saying he is going to be our next coach as some things still have to play out for it to even be possible.
Having said that, you are truly ignorant to the situation if you don't think we have a chance of getting him. IMO our chances go up by the day.
What once seemed like a dream, appears to now be the most likely scenario.

2 things come to mind that need to happen... (and I'll exit the thread at this...)

I don't get Lakers fans. Phil Jackson would be under .500 with the roster out there compounded by the injuries. They have a ton of money tied up in two players who barely saw the floor any this year. Blame Kobe for taking the huge salary to sit on his butt all year and preventing the team from having any ability to acquire healthy talent.

That would be a better explanation than the alternative.... Marshall's first and maybe second choices turned us down and we are continuing to search for a quality candidate that will take what Marshall can offer pay wise.

Just one more reason we need to change our name to the University of Charlotte.

Now, that would be cool. You pretty much go by Charlotte when people talk about you, at least in the conference, anyway.

Rebranding our athletics as Charlotte in the early 2000's has worked well in the media. Locals still call us UNCC, but very few people in the media do.
Recruits / HS coaches often refer to us as The University of Charlotte in interviews (at least when they're not from NC).
