About that new DL....Yikes!
http://www.huskiewire.com/articles/2014/.../index.xml

Quote:Players who will be expected to contribute more include senior Jason Meehan (6.5 sacks in 2013), junior Perez Ford (four sacks) and sophomore Austin Smaha at the end spot and senior Donovan Gordon and sophomores Mario Jones and Michael Ippolito at defensive tackle.

Just not much size there at all. Heck wasn't Smaha supposed to be a LB?
We may get teams running against us more than the pass.

Without size, they will continue to get manhandled by the OLs.

Do they switch to a 3-4...and play 4 linebackers? We seem to have an abundance of those..

only way to effectively play a 3-4 would be having a monster nose tackle and large d-ends. So actually playing 3-4 is worse for us since we have a smaller d-line

What about? Brian Canoy where is he, that guy is huge.. We seem to be unable to develop DL specificall NG/DT

94 Donovan Gordon DT 6-0 301
57 Brian Canoy DT 6-5 277
98 Cal Breedlove DT 6-1 264
92 Mario Jones DT 6-0 275
99 Thomas Scanlan DT 6-0 285
96 Michael Ippolito DT 6-3 264
69 Corey Thomas DT 6-2 308

NIUs strategy.

Recruit Safeties to play Linebacker (Santa, Lemon, etc.)
Recruit linebackers to play DE (Meehan, Ford, Smaha, etc.)
Recruit DE to play DT (Ippolito)

for a 3-4 defense you need giant space eaters to take on double teams to keep the o-line off your linebackers so they can run free and shoot gaps to make plays. With that being said, your nose tackle usually is a massive dude about 320 lbs plus (ex Dontari Poe from the Chiefs and Ngata on the Ravens) then your D-ends are also bigger guys that are usually run stoppers, not pass rushers because in a 3-4 that duty usually goes to the OLBs.

Im not saying we couldnt do it, but from a technique standpoint its very different. Look at Larry English in SD, didnt transfer well. However, if Perez Ford could drop and cover and could potentially be an awesome OLB in a 3-4

Ward was a great one but not real big. Brandon Mayes has beefed up and might play safety at 5'11 186.

Interesting no mention of Cameron Clinton-Dix or William Lee in the article? I know they've been practicing and I figure they would be two of the big contributors this year.

Plus I still wonder if Shane Evans should be moved from OG to the DT position as a freshman. He would see a lot of playing time right out of the box and could lock up that position for the next several years.

The old Phil Fulmer strategy!!! Tennessee made a living off that in their old days!!! But then again, that was the SEC.

Information Priority:
1. Quarterback Derby
2. Quarterback Derby
3. Quarterback Derby

If DC reads this board, that is the most important

Nitz just seems to do the minimum. Sahly was the best.

That being said, if the QB's are all sucking you won't see that in print.

As it's not even half-way in to Spring Ball so I'm not gonna worry....yet.
