From what I have heard it sounds like Baker will be getting rid of the 2 year requirement

Interesting. That would solve the Stevenson bed issue and would not require a new dorm be built within the 5 year plan.

That is fine but as of 2015 NIU will require the students to live in the dorms for the first 2 years.

Yes, I understand the new 2 year dorm housing requirement. My point is, if there isn't enough dorm housing to accommodate an enrollment increase, the university can release some students to live in off-campus housing, of which there is plenty.

Is University Plaza still approved housing? I was put there one year due to overcrowding.

Wow, thats the first I have heard of that.

I know people were put in the student center hotel short term in 99-03.

Even more reason to have President Baker to come out with a 5 and 15 year plan for his vision...The last master plan also had this spine idea but was never followed thru.

What happened to Peters' "Vision 2020" plan of increasing enrollment to 30,000 by 2020? How can you accomplish dorm demolition and increased enrollment simultaneously? Or is the vision retired along with its author?

Even though we saw some good improvements on campus enrollment still wasn't going up.

Last data I recall stumbling across stated the number of HS grads in Illinois was trending downwards...unless Peter's Plan was to draw more from outside Illinois and foreign students.

It was. Much more focus was on transfers from CCs and international students. President Baker is continuing with that focus.

RE: Douglas Hall to be demolished this summer
I was able to take a looksee of Douglas....basically a building in transition....remnants of the school year just ended, furniture being earmarked to this dorm or that building, pieces of the building being scavenged for any value...basically a building on its death throes. I took some pictures (Each picture has a short narrative with it)...hope you ex-Douglas-ites enjoy!

Wow that makes me sad. I didn't live in Douglas but lived next door in Grant and used to visit Douglas all the time.

I'm definitely going to be an old geezer in 20-30 years saying "Back in my day this used to be called Douglas..."

I just couldn't get into the overly fat (ton of bread ton of meat) sandwich...it was all just too much. But a great value to the value seekers!

What a dump. I visited a friend's daughter there two years ago. Her dorm room furniture looked like it was 50 years old, worn out and missing parts. The hallways were about 4 feet wide, dark with concrete block on both sides. The place stunk. I was shocked this was still a dorm after visiting the new dorm a block over.

Look, was Douglas a classy place for classy people? No, but as a 18-20 year old it was great. Great people doing stupid things and underage drinking. Great times! Then you move out and grow up (a little). I learned a lot in Douglas. :)

RE: Douglas Hall to be demolished this summer
I have fond memories of Douglas my freshman year and that 2003 football season. Our entire dorm floor would go to games together and as we racked up win after win we would all be waiting for the new rankings to come out the next day as NIU continued to climb.

I don't remember it being a bad dorm to live in at all. My only gripe was having no AC and that first week at NIU was extremely hot!

If anything, Lincoln Hall should get demolished before Douglas. I remember Douglas being in better condition than Lincoln.

wasn't Stevenson renovated a few years ago into suites and totally updated?

when you're a college student, you're fairly resiliant and those things don't matter so much.04-cheers
