Wonderful characters, wonderful story, great humor, great set pieces, but maybe only average action. But I tend to gravitate to films that favor story and characters over action. Winter Soldier was pretty much First Avenger with better action.
Action must be purposeful, otherwise it's just Transformers. And hey, I like the Transformers movies. They are a good way to waste 2 hours every 3 years or so. But I leave them feeling underwhelmed, like I do when watching MOS. That action in MOS looked a lot better in a theater than it did on my 50 inch. Good story and character development doesn't need IMAX.
It boils down to this. Marvel Studios has the leadership and talent in place to bring the best out of their characters in order to make great films. Warner Brothers thinks "hey let's hire the guys that did Dark Knight (except ya know, the actually important director) and do the same thing with Superman". Or they just make really bad movies like Green Lantern, Catwoman, Batman 3 and 4 or Jonah Hex.
In my lifetime, the only good DC-WB made were directed by Tim Burton or Chris Nolan, two legendary filmmakers. Marvel just made a phenomenal movie, that will make tons of cash, with a couple of sitcom directors.
I agree with you about Marvel studios.
Time Warner should force WB to create a "DC Studios" and put the person who runs the comics in charge. I think the comics execs have more say-so in the DC animated films than the movies and the quality shows.
Personally I think the Burton Batman movies suck, and I think Watchmen and Constantine were good and V for Vendetta was great. Those are DC movies too.
My biggest criticism with WB has been the lack of willingness to take chances.
You know why you have good Marvel Studios movies? Desperation.
The very existence of Marvel Comics as a company was banked on the success of Iron Man and Incredible Hulk as movies. If they failed, marvel comics probably would have gone bankrupt again. So they had to be high quality.
Warner Bros (and time warner) was and is on sold financial ground. They didn't need DC franchise so desperately. especially considering they had Harry potter, Lord of the rings, and the matrix printing money for ten years. That's why they through millions into a superman franchise before Superman Returns came out in 2006.
Batman has traditionally been the biggest comic book franchise (the avengers may be now) in the movies (Batman, Dark Knight, and DKR were beyond blockbusters) and you'd have to think WB will be very protective of Batman in MoS 2 since they'll have to rely on DC more as their franchises have ended.
