Works fine. Pay rent and be a good tenant. Still have faith as the prime mission and tenant of the school. The school has simply opened up to a more accepting positions. Less than 30% of the students identify as C of C but over 80% identify as Christian.

Good. Williamson was a football coach when I was there....he and Speedy (who was a year younger than me) seem to be working together to make some huge moves over there. Glad to see it.

RE: STR - Harding Academy "Happy in Memphis" video
I don't think Harding has "dropped" the Church of Christ affiliation.
From Harding's Website:
What is Harding Academy's religious affiliation?
Harding Academy was founded as Memphis Christian School by members of local church of Christ congregations. Churches of Christ are autonomous congregations using the Bible as their guide. There is no central governing body or heirarchy for churches of Christ, therefore Harding Academy has never answered to an outside governing body. The Board of Directors and faculty are made up of members of local church of Christ congregations.

Can only church of Christ families and students attend Harding Academy?
Our current student body is roughly 40% church of Christ students. The other 60% are from a variety of Christian traditions or non-Christian religions.

One of the faculty just puts the videos together in his free time with his own equipment. The kids love it and it reps our school. The Christmas video was fantastic as well.

Harding is still a Christian school but it is no longer Church of Christ. We have many denominations and non Christians as well in our student body. The kids can dance all night if the beats just right.

You must be pulling my leg and my arm... Harding is no longer affiliated with the C of C? When did that go down? It's always been open to students of any faith (especially one who pay their tuition in advance), but the Church of Christ was the only acceptable brand of religion when it came to chapel, bible class and staff selection. Do tell...

Harding has really changed even since I went there in the 80's. It dropped the C of C affiliation a couple of years ago and is a great place for kids. I have 2 in high school there.

It is the most diverse private school in the city and is doing a great job of providing a great christian environment where the kids know being saved doesn't mean you can't have fun.

The new president at the school has really put a fresh coat of paint on the school both internally and externally.

There is no way it could be more diverse than Catholic High School, if you call parochial "private."

My impression is Catholic is majority A-A.

And the Harding Board of Directors and staff will be shocked to discover they are no longer affiliated with the C of C.

I am certain this is the case. I will get something tomorrow to show that the affiliation has been dropped. Maybe the website is out of date but of the affiliation drop I would say I'm 99.999 % certain.

Regardless, a great place for kids that has loosened up tremendously. Teachers are no longer required to be CofC and the campus is incredibly diverse and happy.

heck we couldnt even go mixed swimming when i was interred there.

at that performance by Bobby Bowie's band in the late 70's, I got asked to leave the cafeteria because I was "dancing". I was tapping my foot and maybe swaying side to side lol.

Being "Baptist" was equal to being agnostic in those days.

My Mom teaches there and you are 100% wrong. It is still a C of C affiliated school that has always been open to students of all backgrounds. I think what you are seeing is that the C of C is becoming more progressive overall (at least the churches that are growing)

To the previous poster who mentioned Coach Rubio -- One of the single most important outside influences on my life and I'm sure on many other likes me. Great man and this honor is long overdue!!

When my son did his year at Catholic in 2003, it didn't seem to be majority African-American. It was Caucasian, Asian, and African-American, including many refugees from Africa that had to literally run through the jungle for their lives. It was a mini-United Nations.

The academics and physical plant were weak, the teachers ran the gamut from great to disinterested, the administration was harsh and rude, and the tuition was very reasonable. But the life experience with the diversity was invaluable. JMTC

Now, I have no idea what it is like today.

That is good to hear. Don't take this wrong ~ I have absolutely no knowledge of the school today or the new leadership. I assume it is an awesome school, as you all have indicated. But the, I guess, former administration was a horrible neighbor, to the point of neighborhood lawsuits. Unreasonable, unbending, and arrogant.

That being said, anyone interested in an awesome house abutting Harding's campus with direct walking access, PM me. It would make a great home for a Harding family with several children. It will be on the market soon.

I graduated there many years ago and really enjoyed the video. Hopefully what I perceived as a narrow view and experience has grown to be more inclusive and accepting.

It is good to see.

....

Not to take this to a level that we don't need to be in, but.........

I think that the confusion comes from a philosophy that Harding doesn't want to be viewed as preaching a denomination to students; therefore the (sometimes) public stance is that they are Christian but not "denominational". Additionally, I believe that not being "denominational" coincides with the Church of Christ's public philosophy/stance. The confusion is easily more understood when viewed in that light.

The video was outstanding!!
