I can agree with that. However, there are several other teams that will probably get in ahead of us that shouldn't. Like 19-12 Iowa who is 5-9 vs Top 50 with an RPI of 57 and seven losses in their last ten games.

RE: Southern Miss vs the "eye test"
It looks like it might be down to BYU or USM. Basically, it's which is better: good wins or no bad losses. BYU has beaten Texas, Stanford, and Gonzaga, but have a lot of bad losses (Loyola-Marymount, Pacific, Portland, Pepperdine). Southern Miss has some good wins, though nothing that stands out quite as much as BYUs, but nothing quite as bad on the loss side.

Iowa is in 92 of the 99 brackets on http://www.bracketmatrix.com.
Tennessee is in 91.

YES I am biased towards USM and will use these numbers with those # teams:
Road records:
USM 10-5
SMU 6-6
UT 4-7
Losses vs RPI 100 and worse
USM - 2 (at 125, at 152)
SMU - 3 (at 231, at 176, neutral vs 146)
UT - 4 (neutral vs 103, at 147, home vs 147, at 119)
Last 12 games
USM 9-3
SMU 7-5
UT 7-5
These are 3 that have hurt USM in past year that were emphasized: Road record, bad losses, and how we finished the season
And 1 final stat from espn.com:
non conference SOS
USM 150
SMU 303
UT 42

USM was able to do what Tennessee wasn't.... Beat UTEP.
I know it is only common opponent, but UTEP throttled TN.

Plus, BYU just lost their best player to a torn ACL in the WCC title game. That probably knocks them out and puts us in.

I do believe the Selection Committee takes an injury into account if it affects games already played. BYU fate has already been determine regardless if he is BYU's best player.

Providence winning the BE Tourney did not help USM chances. Providence was one of the last four in according to Lunardi before the win over Creighton.

A Salt Lake Tribune article has the following quote from the chairman of the Selection Committee.
-----------------
In a teleconference Wednesday, Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman, who is the chairman of the Selection Committee this year, said the committee will take into consideration recent injuries when it hands out bids Sunday. He may have been referring to the BYU case when he said, "We already received a report this morning" about an injury.
"We will follow those injuries. We will get updates on the injuries," Wellman said. "We will be well-aware of the latest information and whether that individual is going to be available to his team during the tournament. It is a discussion point with the committee, the injury reports, how that might impact the team."
Wellman said it is up to each committee member as to how much weight they want to put on a particular injury.
--------------
I guess we'll see if Collinsworth's injury keeps BYU out.

Yes you had 5 ranked teams this year but next year when you add Tulane and ECU (Tulsa is a push even though I give them credit for winning CUSA Tourney and co-champs in reg season) and lose Louisville (reg season co-champs, tourney champs, and top 20 RPI), the AAC will fall a spot or 2. Yes you will still be ahead of CUSA but it won't be the power league it is now

Big Wins: ND State, La Tech, GA State
record v. RPI top-50: 1-1

I just don't see how you can put USM in the NCAAs over teams like those listed above. (both projected 11 seeds by ESPN)
You had already removed the two non-D1 wins from Southern Miss's record so why mention them? We are 27-6, 25-6 for RPI purposes.
