soon, i hope

I have a feeling that regardless of how we lost last night the board would be the same. Of course I have no way of knowing but it seems that we could lose on a buzzerbeater 3 on our own floor and pitchforks would come out.

I think people just get frustrated. They care about their team, and C-USA made us soft. No, not our team, or our players. Our fans. Our fans have been made soft by years of fattening up win totals against C-USA. Many people here don't remember the year our Elite 8 team with Penny Hardaway got beat FOUR TIMES in one season by Cincinnati, in devastating fashion.

Watching that UConn/Cincinnati game tonight really put in stark relief how much improved our level of competition is. You go to sleep against one of those teams, you get hammered. You pout a little or show poor body language, you get exposed. One of their guys gets hot and goes off, and you get beat. There are teams with more than one good player, and teams that are both athletic AND good shooters so that you have to pick your poison on defense.

Our fanbase hasn't seen that level of competition in our league in a decade or so, probably much longer, actually. Probably closer to 20 years. This might be the best hoops league we've ever been in, at least at the top.

I feel quite sure that if we were to think about it rationally (as opposed to emotionally), most would probably agree that another lengthy rebuilding process is the last thing we need right now. They'd probably realize that Pastner's first five years have been more successful by almost every metric than Calipari's first five years. They'd probably remember that Pastner has improved every year, and continues to tick off the arbitrary boxes that the fanbase creates. No tournament wins? Check. No top 25 wins? Check. No deep tournament run? Well, we will see. We still have a shot this year, though it will be more difficult with our early AAC tournament exit.

It's just emotion talking. That, and the fact that as a fanbase, we got soft.

This.

I'd love a 1992 style run to the Elite Eight...but if UConn beats us a fourth time, Nick Van Exel may be replaced by Shabazz Napier in my nightmares.

His guards actually do what guards should do...get assists. Think Boatright had 6 vs us whereas our best backcourt in the nation aka 4 kings had 3 collectively.

We've struggled mightily in that area quite often this year when playing teams like uconn. The sample size is there.

Agreed. There's a guy arguing in another thread that he's done with the Tigers because they play small ball, and his reasoning for said abandonment of his team is because he can't confidently place a wager on them like he could on a good hand at a poker table in Tunica.
Geez.

The need to constantly tear down people in the guise of praising others only reveals your own pettiness and worthlessness.

Kevin Ollie is a great young coach. Ours is doing pretty well, too.

regardless of where you stand on Pastner or Ollie, no one can deny that your team is going to run better on the floor with a PG like Napier. Boatwright is really good too, and probably gets overlooked because of Napier.

I am glad we won't have to face him next year and I would not be surprised to see UConn make a nice run in the tourney.

If given a choice for hiring, would you take Ollie or pastner? Only 2 options.

Win a national championship by beating Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisville, Arizona and Duke and they will end...for a day or so.

Hmm. I think right now I'd keep Pastner, but maybe its a tossup. Lets see how tough UConn is when they don't have Napier. and lets see how we do the next few years when our emphasis won't be on "the 4 senior guards." I don't know what Ollie is like as a recruiter, but as long as pastner keeps recruiting at a high level, this is not an easy choice. Would I personally prefer the "style" of Ollie - yes, but I am not ready to say I'd prefer him as the coach. In fact, I am not so sure they did not slightly underachieve this year when you look at just how good their guards are. but i also think they may make a deep run.

Good recovery.

And while it may be condescending- getting UConn instead of the handful of other teams is a let down- and just a fact.

Here is a correction for you from the South. It is not you guys, it is Y'all........ Anyway I hope that Y'all have a deep run in the tourney and that Memphis, Louisville, Cincy, and SMU also have a deep run in order to elevate the recognition of our conference.

Just FYI.

It was not for no reason.

It was a response to the continued and fatiguing backhanded slaps at Memphis- as though we were unaware (and soft) that losing Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, soon to be Louisville, already Syracuse, Pitt, WV and Notre Dame, and NYC MSG as a host for the postseason tourney was a disappointment. This admitted condescending poster bore the brunt of a lot of others' railing on Memphis- as though taken alone- UConn is any more satisfactory.

Along with many others, just a little tired of it.

As it stands, they- especially after the Calhoun kids leave- will need Memphis and vice versa. Also a bit tired with going 0-3, when it should have been a less disappointing 1-2 after the screw job- and as such would keep the advice from afar more minimal.

Memphis leaves- in the current format- and then what do they have?

I was wrong about Ollie. I made a comment early in the season that I thought the guy wasn't a good match for UCONN. I just didn't like the way they played, but they were struggling at the time. But what he has done the last two years has shown he can do the job. I was way wrong, UCONN has a keeper.
