We always have to look at where we are today (or in the case of our hoops team where we were three years ago).

Quite frankly, I'm pretty surprised that Murphy has been able to get the quality players that we saw playing this week given where the program was 35 months ago when he took over.

He talked a lot of players like Riley, GB III, Talley, Harrison, Lee, Ward, etc. (and Price) to come to a program which had been down for too long.

I have no doubt that he will continue to recruit well. I think it is only a matter of time where he can get EMU back into Detroit area high schools and mine the high school talent.

We have a very good coach, very nice arena, etc. We have the ingredients to do very well going forward.

Is he even trying to recruit HS kids? It looks to me that he's going after the quick fix with JUCOs and transfers. Win ASAP and get the big pay day elsewhere seems to be the strategy. Hope I'm wrong.

STEVE, WHAT SAY YOU ABOUT WHICH TOURNAMENT EMU HOOPS WILL BE INVITED TO? LOOK INTO YOUR CHRYSTAL BALL AND MAKE A PREDICTION.

HOPE WE ARE SELECTED AND HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN A GAME OR TWO. WHOEVER WE PLAY, MURPHY'S ZONE WILL PRESENT PROBLEMS FOR OUR OPPONENT ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVEN'T SEE OUR ZONE THIS SEASON. IT'S OUR OFFENSE THAT IS THE CONCERN

P.S. WHEN IN VEGAS NEXT WEEK, PUT YOUR MONEY ON SPARTY

There are 351 teams in division I basketball. The computer rankings I have seen put EMU somewhere between 85 and 123. Depends on how the ranking weights things like margin of victory and such. I say this for two points:

1) EMU will be invited to one of the post season tourneys since their rankings are well within the range of the 148 available invitation slots. 68 to the NCAA, 32 to the NIT, 16 to the CBI, and 32 to the CIT.

2) Based on the computer rankings, EMU was within the top third of Division I teams. Half of this top third of teams are made up of teams from the 6 (or now 7) perennially major conferences. While this is not an outstanding season, it is a solid one for a mid-major in general. And especially for one that was no where near this level since 1998.

As an EMU fan, I would like to congratulate the players and coaches on the successes that were achieved this year. And thank them for an entertaining season in which they were competitive right up to the end. I am proud of you, and look forward to following you on some level in whatever tournament they land in.

They usually wait until the NCAA tournament field has been announced.

We should hope Western wins and Toledo also gets invited, that'd give us a shot at the NIT.

That is true, but the selections need to be made NOW as game preparations have to be underway before Sunday night/Monday morning.

Games all over, across tourneys will start Tuesday night. NCAA has their little 1st round Tuesday and I believe CIT, NIT and maybe more start early too.

Bingo Wooden, the problem I've had with Murphy as evidenced with his flirtation with Orlando after one year was it seems to have been more about Murphy and not EMU. I agree he's been around three years and we haven't gotten our share of Detroit or MI high school recruits. This is what makes this April and May interesting to me-is Murphy going to stay and build the program given the challenges he faces next year or is he ready to cash it all in and leave the rebuilding to whomever comes after him?

Why would h.s. kids want to come here two or three years ago? The program was in the toilet.

Didn't Todd K at Toledo, who inherited a team deeper in the toilet than ours (FOUR years ago), do EXACTLY what Murphy did? Todd K loaded up with D-I transfers including TWO from his former school, WI-GB, and then added Drummond and Witherspoon. Now he is going both transfer and H.S. - I believe he has a very good D-I transfer sitting out and he has been recruiting h.s. very well.

Todd K and Murphy have written the book how to turn a program around in the MAC.

And there have been MANY MAC coaches who failed miserably to turn their languishing programs.

We're not talking three years ago Steve, we're talking current day. Again a healthy program also has a steady stream of high school talent especially locally you can talk about Toledo what about WMU, Ohio U and or Akron and Buffalo which seem to build on high school talent.

Another thing to consider about transfers is that most of them didn't pan out at their previous schools for a reason. It's OK to have one or two of them, but to continually build your core around transfers is probably a bad idea.

Of course, you realize that TWO of the top four teams in the MAC this year (EMU and UT) are loaded with transfers.

And at the bottom of the MAC are teams full of high school kids.

Life ought not be full of silly rules which might sound good but don't work.

Take it easy, chief. I wouldn't call our transfer exercise a success. I don't consider EMU to be a top 4 team in the MAC. Buffalo and Akron were better overall, and I'm not talking about the results of one game. How were Buffalo and Akron built? How was Western built?

I can see why you worked for the government with your attitude -- who made you the arbiter of what is right and wrong?

I'd say it's been somewhat of a success. We were awful three years ago, and we aren't awful anymore. Not one of our transfers has been a disappointment in my eyes. I wish Riley could've developed more offensively, but his defense was a major part of our team.

Two of Buffalo's three best players are transfers. Same with Ohio. Quincy Diggs is a transfer too. Some of the best players in the MAC in recent years have been transfers. Does it always work? No. You could say the same about recruiting high school kids though.

I wish Murph recruited high school better, but if this team is competitive, I'll live with it.

I just stand up for my opinions and those who share the views I hold.

Feel free to disagree, but I doubt I'll change my mind. Sorry.

I would love to see us get Clemmons (Iowa) if he transfers (think he will) or Ronnie Johnson (Purdue - announced his decision to transfer today).
