Does Murry Bartow return next season?
My guess is that he did enough to save his job (barely), and the money they would have used for the buyout will buy some shoulder pads.

RE: Does Murry Bartow return next season?
100 percent he's back. Like him or not, he did a great job with this team. It's almost as if he remembered he liked coaching basketball again, and had a little fire in his belly. As I posted in the other thread, I don't think he deserves an extension, but I bet he gets a one year extension to make recruiting easier.
He can sell going into a VERY WEAK SoCon next season and having atleast a top three finish, if not better.

Agreed. The Lipscomb game probably did it.

I think his contract is up. I'm guessing ETSU owes Murry nothing at this point. If that is the case....I unload....if ETSU doesn't have a better coach waiting in the wings. I suggest they do and it would be a chance for the region to get excited about ETSU basketball again. He's been on the scene since 2005...his best seasons were his first two. I'm hoping new blood comes in and ETSU dominates the Southern...attendance goes back to Les Robinson - Alan LeForce peak years allowing ETSU to move to a multiple bid league....and making a home and home series with Tennessee possible. Go Bucs...think big and make it happen. Come on Dr. Sander. Lead us to the promised land!

Crap. Another year of Bartow soap opera. I'm guessing that's on Noland...the extension. What was he thinking?

No...the extension was made by Dave Mullins a few years ago.

I understand your point but for clarity, the budgets for football and the rest of the athletic department/sports are separate.

Tennessee doesn't hardly want to give Memphis a home and home (and vice versa), ETSU would have to be Wichita State good with an arena to match it.
They'll at a minimum honor the deal, I have to grit my teeth to type this but he earned it.

I did not know that. Interesting. It wasn't like that last time was it?

RE: Does Murry Bartow return next season?
I understand the sentiment for Les Robinson, but he left for greener pastures; so did Sonny Smith. And, if Bartow had of been in that category, he'd be long gone. What's a mid- major school to do? Successful coaches flee regularly, unless its the Belmont or Davidson coach. Just saying, who could ETSU get who would not hit the road with the success of the Robinson and Smith eras? Just checking the reality pulse.

Very true. But some mid-majors recruit a good coach to replace their departed one. I do not think we have done that yet. Seems like every winning coach has been replace by a dud.

No way Bartow should be back next year. I understand the points in this thread about this team and its success, but with the talent thats coming back it is the perfect time to hire a new coach. Sander has the connections and I guarantee you it will be a hell of a lot easier for him to hire somebody now versus last year at this time.

No it wasn't but there was no dedicated student fee involved at that time, and no promise not to gut other sports to fund football.

It's because he has a basketball guy as a boss rather than a tennis coach. A change in leadership has clearly changed his performance.

Is that partly due to scholarship distribution and Title IX?

RE: Does Murry Bartow return next season?
I do not see how Bartow has earned another year. With another coach, a team with the same talent as us would have won 4-5 more games. We would not have had Petey McClain as a starting point guard, we would not have had our center acting as a point guard half the time, we would not have given up all of the three pointers that cost us games, and we would have had a more structured offense that would allow the team to flourish.

We have had the most talent in the league every year that we have been in the conference, except last year. An extension even for one year would result in less season tickets and donations, especially combined with the move to Freedom Hall. There just really is no reason to keep him at all.

Not really, just more related to the student fee structure and accountability.
