Murray State might be worth it for the basketball pickup. I think they want to be in SoCon more, but who knows...

why would you think they want in the SoCon?

Stability, which I know sounds weird for SoCon, but it's about getting into that core of ETSU, UTC, and WCU. Some MSU fans weren't thrilled they got "passed over" for ETSU...I never knew they even wanted it.

The OVC does have too many schools gunning for other pastures others want. A lot of OVC schools figured their ceiling was where it was because of that queue. Schools like SEMSU, EIU, SIUE...that's the MVC and Summit line (until Summit became a hot mess). I've heard "Belmont to" as a prefix to Horizon, CAA, A10...it's obvious OVC isn't where they ultimately wanted to be. EKU and JSU are exploring FBS viability. What's left are these tiny public schools that make OVC very much a bus league, but a directionless one.

From someone that follows this closely, and has connections to Murray State, this is news, and I would like to see sourcing.

You do know Murray is in far western Kentucky, nowhere close to ANY SoCon school. The two closest, Samford (four hours) and ETSU (6 hours) are outliers for the SoCon, and Murray would have to drive past most every OVC school other than EIU, SEMO and SIU-E to get to each. SoCon basketball is in bad shape, too boot.

LOL - brain fart - fixed.

Forgot about Chatty - four hours. Still, have to drive past 3 OVC schools to get there

All OVC schools, except Jacksonville State and the other two Kentucky schools are closer

RE: Horizon League Will Make A Move?!!
The only place I could see Murray State going is the Missouri Valley, and that's only if the Summit can land North Dakota to allow the MVFC to expand to 12, or if Missouri State leaves the MVC and MVFC. North Dakota isn't going to the Summit as long as the Summit retains its current leadership due to the Summit's handling of UND's nickname issue.

The irony of the Horizon League taking NKU is it actually doesn't hurt the Atlantic Sun at all - NKU isn't a counter yet for the Atlantic Sun, so the Atlantic Sun will be free to add a school from Division II. Even if the Atlantic Sun loses a different school, it can still successfully navigate the grace period by the time NKU becomes a counter.

NKU also gives the Horizon five pairs of super-tight travel partners:

Detroit/Oakland
Northern Kentucky/Wright State
Youngstown State/Cleveland State
Valparaiso/Illinois-Chicago
Green Bay/Milwaukee

Four of the Horizon's nine men's sports have only six participants - NKU will help with all four.

Evansville to the Horizon is like the people who want Tulsa back to the MVC. The Valley could raid the Horizon at any time.

Agree Mo St is taking an FBS bid and leaving the MVC. Wichita St is gone too, likely the MWC.

The MVC will take Murray State (w/ football, keeps fb at 10) and adds a Horizon team (UIC, Milwaukee, or Valpo). The MVC wants to be a bus league, and east or north is easy for bus trips.

The Horizon adds NKU and either Belmont or one of IUPUI (has a new arena coming) or IPFW.

If we weren't willing to take BYU's olympic sports when they offered them to us, BYU has a bigger following and would bring in more money, I can't see us taking Wichita St.

AAC for Wichita St. if they want a non fb school or stay in the MVC.

UND would never have anything to do with Commissioner Douple of the Summit. The AD at NDSU isn't exactly helpful either. Both would have to leave before UND would ever consider the remote possibility. UND has developed deep ties to Montana, Montana State, and Idaho and wants to further develop those. The Big Sky ties UND in geographically with the energy industry in the Bakken, and that's a source of very big corporate dollars. (e.g. billionaire oil baron Harold Hamm donated money in return for the School of Geology being named after him, and a Collaborative Research Center for Petroleum and Chemical Engineering is currently in late stages of fundraising.) UND is THE school for Bakken Research, as a core library with all the ND oil core samples ever drilled is on campus. Enhanced recovery research at UND could mean billions of more barrels. Geology, petroleum eng, law, and business are all fast growing majors on campus.

BYU won't affiliate with Utah State. Been a fact for almost 60 years. BYU gave the B12 a problem when there were talks, why would they affiliate with the MWC?

Wichita St gives the MWC a Central Time Zone school, which gives the MWC much more TV options. It also allows divisions, which would add more OOC games and allow the MWC to increase their RPI. Their baseball and volleyball are strong too. If Wichita St doesn't move, they have little chance of retaining their coach. The MWC took Colorado College in women's soccer. Conveniently, Wichita State doesn't have women's soccer.

While I am skeptical that MWC has any burning desire to get to 12 in sports other than football, I don't see BYU's situation making your case given the fact that BYU's greatest value is football and they don't want to be in the MWC for football, it makes little sense for BYU to be permitted to take advantage of MWC membership solely where it suits them, especially given that they withdrew as a member.

If MWC has the itch for 12 there are plenty of credible options such as bringing Hawaii in for all sports, Gonzaga, Denver, San Francisco, New Mexico State, UC Irvine, UCSB, or Seattle that can scratch that itch without the messiness associated with allowing BYU partially back in.

Wichita State certainly would be a good add, but most leagues are now shunning divisions in basketball and even some are doing so in baseball now.

You and Ark St., this is a FACT that BYU asked for olympic sports membership, even w/ the knowledge that Utah St. would be there. MWC said no. All or nothing. Right the have never said wanted or needed to go to 12 for all sports. Hawaii bringing the rest would be the most likely but neither MWC or Hawaii want all that travel. I was commenting on the what if WSU left the MVC post. BYU is still worth more than the rest for olympic sports b/c of their national following, plus we could have a scheduling deal for fb like ND. BYU article said a few days ago that Indy isn't a long term solution(well no sh*t) so I figure they'll try to get in the B12.
We don't need the central time zone or we woulda added UTSA and UTEP. Our benefit is that we can start games later so we only compete w/ Pac12 and not the rest of america for viewers. Ark St. The silliness of those names other than Gonzaga you post is equal to me telling you to add HBU, Presbyterian, SIUE to SBC.

RE: Horizon League Will Make A Move?!!
Conference realignment has quieted down for now, but Holmoe believes it will pick up again at some point. He thinks all of the power conferences will play a championship game as part of the new playoff system. The Big 12 currently has only 10 teams and does not play a championship game. Let’s hope the conference decides to expand and invites BYU. At some point, BYU football will need to have a conference affiliation. Independence is not a long-term solution. Read more at http://www.ksl.com/?nid=272&sid=28853333...6Jifg8C.99
BYU gets it right with new Honor Code policy

Anyway back onto Horizon. If they take NKU the ASC would have the minimum for AQ and whoever they bring in wouldn't count towards being 8th counting member until 5 years after. If KSU gets full membership in the Big South, ASC AQ would be at risk.

Whoa buddy, you seem to be getting worked up for no reason.

My point and I damn sure I'm right, is that any of those schools would stand a better chance of being the mythical 12th Oly member over BYU because of the history with BYU and BYU's refusal to bring all sports.

My whole point of contention was that BYU not getting accepted as the 12th Oly member didn't prove that the MWC wouldn't take a 12th Oly member because other factors were in play. I specifically said, I'm skeptical of the idea MWC is looking for such a member but if the league were there are a bunch who would get the slot before BYU. That was the entirety of my point.

BYU AD said a few days ago that Indy isn't a long term solution(well no sh*t) so I figure they'll try to get in the B12.

That was the entirety of my point.
the ones you named have 0 chance, BYU 1% that's still more and I said how. If they had a scheduling agreement. It's not like we hate them they play MWC schools now. But this would probably not happen either, they'd need to be rejected by the B12 then follow up w/ MWC offering all sports, see who blinks. Still 0 none nada for the ones you named. I didn't even quote yours b/c I thought just the the last part was silly and told you the SBC version. NoDaK and the fact nonsense, yet they play every year, and obviously wasn't true when they wanted to put their olympics there. If you say I'm worked up it's over that. But not really. why are we still talking about this on the Horizon thread. Its fun to talk about non fbs conferences too you know.

Evansville to the Horizon rumor has been around the years. It might have started with the University itself as a threat if a new arena wasn't built.

The Aces just moved into a new 11,000 seat arena in 2011.

Evansville is only 3 hours from St. Louis where the MVC tournament is played. I believe the Horizon League tournament is played at the school with the higher seeds. It doesn't sound like a good arrangement for Evansville in the Horizon.

IPFW sounds like the right school for the Horizon because they like the mid sized upper midwest market that is uncontested locally for D1 basketball competition.

Fort Wayne would fit right in that mold. Only a 2,000 seat gym on campus but they have access to a 13,000 seat arena in Fort Wayne for bigger games.

Let me state this quite plainly and clearly: HORIZON LEAGUE PRESIDENTS HAVE ALREADY STATED THAT THEY DO NOT WANT IUPUI NOR IPFW!

Granted our Commissioner, Jon LeCrone lives in Indianapolis and the NCAA is in Indy, so that might make one think that LeCrone will revisit those 2 schools and bring them up to the Executive Board again, but they've said what they've said.

Evansville has had its greatest success as a part of the MCC/Horizon League and has been in deep doo-doo ever since joining the MVC. I understand the HL is below the Valley, but for those that don't really follow the Horizon as much as your posts perpetrate that you do (not talking about any ONE individual), the HL is not light-years behind the Valley. The Valley was ranked #11 this season, after taking a hit from the Creighton loss and the Loyola invite. They were ranked number 8 last season. The HL was ranked #14 this season, in part due to the horrendous season that my own school, UIC had, Detroit rebuilding and Oakland coming into conference play with a tough record/rpi. We were ranked #12 last season. Nonetheless when Butler left the HL, we as a conference still maintained our average rpi standing between 11-13. The Valley could not maintain their "normal" standing after losing one of their "big guns"

My point is that, we are closer to the Valley than others may think. Our SOS was stronger this season.

Pride and embarrassment could be a factor as well. Who wants to admit they made a mistake by jumping to a league that at the time, wasn't better than the MCC?

The HL tourney setup doesn't sound like a good arrangement? How many teams would LOVE to have a tournament game at HOME? Or have the tournament on their own homecourt? In the HL, our setup gives the regular season a whole lot more meaning. It insures that our better teams are rewarded for having a good season and possibly avoiding early round upsets and having their respective bubble burst. Maybe Evansville having a tourney home game would help...more so than having the ritual of playing on Thursday night in Arch Madness.

FSA, go back and read that KSL commentary a little closer. The comments that BYU will need to have a conference affiliation and that independence is not a long-term solution weren't bulleted. I'm pretty sure that means those comments came from the writer, Patrick Kinahan, rather than Holmoe.

It's jmho, but I've sort of gotten that impression from MSU fans in various spots and other stuff along the way. Honestly, and I know the distance makes a lot of this seem off, MSU seems to be lined up there with schools like ETSU and UTC. Heck, when the SoCon doomsday stuff was happening, there was the article on UTC where they were said to be looking at the OVC because of their relative stability and other geographical ties, and Murray State, though so far from UTC, was one of those schools the Mocs thought they'd pair well with.

I don't disagree that it's out there. I just don't know if MVC takes them, or if the Horizon even considers them. But, I think SoCon would...and it might be easier now with certain programs no longer steering the ship a different way. I think SoCon would rather have whatever it can of Richmond and TCoW&M, but I think keeping UTC means pushing westward and into OVC anyway.
