I would pick DJ because of his unique talent.
Whose jersey would you retire? I would say neither but Joe would be more deserving.
That was kinda my point that we find DJ's jersey retirement ridiculous, but we may rather have DJ on the team. I guess my theory is that Joe is more easily replaceable than DJ. JMO.
This is not meant to disrespect Joe, just DJ was such a freak of nature.
I also realize that this time next year, I may really miss Joe.
for me I am going to take the more talented guy every time. Joe can shoot/score, pass, dribble, and he is a good athlete. dj can jump high, and he is a good athlete. it is easy for me. but it isn't just with Joe, ask me would I rather have DJ or Nichols, my answer is Nichols. Ask me would I rather have Shaq or DJ, my answer is Shaq. DJ or Doom Haynes, my answer is Doom. DJ or William Bedford, my answer William Bedford. DJ or Tony "Hub Cap" Hubbard, I will take DJ. it is all based on talent and skill level for myself.
Loved Doom but you must be kidding. Jury is still out on Shaq and Austin. I was just comparing Joe and DJ.
No I am not kidding. Doom was way better player at Memphis than DJ. DJ could not shoot, dribble, or pass good at all. He was a great athlete that could jump very very high. Doom was 12th on the all time scoring list with 1479 points. DJ played the same amount of years and came up way way way short, of 1479 points. So no, I am not kidding, Doom was better, Parks was better, Bedford was better, James Bradley was better, and yes Shaq and Nichols are better than DJ too. So, no I am not kidding.

DJ is judged on his uniqueness and what that singularly brings to the game. He is certainly one of the most unique players we've had here. For that reason alone, he could find a spot on most teams historically here.
There are a lot of guys who can score, pass, dribble etc. but there are a finite number of players who can do what he does. That's why he had tremendous success during his senior year and why he is having big success overseas. He may yet get a shot in the NBA at some point as well because of that freak uniqueness he brings to the game.
Bill Cook, Dexter Reed, Doom Haynes, Billy Smith etc. while good players could be interchangeable. Just like Chris Garner, Joe Jackson, Andre Turner, Elliott Perry, Jon Wilfong, Otis Jackson etc. all interchangeable. There aren't any players that I can think of, with the exception of Michael Wilson, that do the things that DJ can do and I think DJ was a much better player than Wilson.

You guys actually sully DJ with the over the top praise.
He overcame his asthma and was a solid player his Senior year. And he was a really nice guy and smiled a lot.
This screams anti-Joe (and anti-Memphis) more than a realistic idea of how good DJ was- unique or not. DJ would be embarrassed.
