Rice v. SHSU (2/25 - 4 pm)
Per @RiceOwlsBSB:

"Rice lineup: Byrd SS, Cook RF, Ewing 1B, Aquino LF, Reeves C, Stainback 2B, Hoelscher 3B, Williamson CF, Teykl DH, Ditman P. 4 pm start."

Interested to see how long Ditman goes. Threw 90 pitches last week against UH. I would have figured we would want him in the pen this weekend, but maybe not.

RE: Rice v. SHSU (2/25 - 4 pm)
Matt surrendered a 2-out walk in the top of the 2nd, but retired the side on his first strikeout (fly out, infield pop, K).

Aquino grounded out to SS. This SHS pitcher is living up to his rep as a sinker ball pitcher. That's the fourth ground out already.
Reeves got the ball in the air, but flied out to CF.
Stainback foul pop to LF.
Going down both quietly (not a hard hit ball yet) and very quickly.

Scoreless heading to the top of the third inning.

Given the calibre of competition this weekend, I'd like to see him available in the pen also.

Uh-oh, 2 on, no outs for the Kats. Ditman gave up a mashed single past Hoelscher, then a great bunt ruled a single.

EDIT: Then a nice play by Ditman gets the lead runner at 3B on the next bunt. 2 on, 1 down. Let's go DP!!

I think we've got plenty in the pen for the weekend with McDowell, Duplantier, Teykl, Smith and Lemond...and, possibly, Rutter, if the injury was not serious.

Bah. A single to RF scores the Kat from 2B, just getting to home before a lunging Reeves. 1st and 3rd with just 1 out.

EDIT: And another laser single scores the Kat from 3rd. 2-0 SHSU. Still just 1 out.

EDIT: Shallow flyball to Cook holds the runners at 2nd and 1st. 2 down. Let's go, Matt!

EDIT: Ugh. Error on Skyler stretching at 1B loads the bases. C'mon, Owls!!

EDIT: And Matt induces the flyball to Cook to end the threat. Nice job getting out of that one, guys. Let's match their runs now.

B3: After a Hoelscher fly out and Williamson strikeout, Teykl works back from 0-2 to get a walk; Owls' first baserunner of the day. 2 down, back to the top of the order.

EDIT: And Byrd works the count, then grounds out to 2B. On to the 4th. Owls down 0-2.

Well, we're actually pretty lucky they got only 2 runs that inning, what with the error and giving up hits to the #8 and #9 hitters to lead off the inning. These guys are just too good an offensive team for that.

Offense needs to wake up. In Brinley's 2 previous appearances this year (one start,, one relief) he was hit very hard: 2 app, 1 start, 6.0 IP, 6.00 ERA, .273 BAA, 6 hits, 4 runs, 1 BB, 6 Ks.
Hoelscher flied out to CF. Boy, we are making very quick work here. Can we take just a few pitches, and work the count a bit.
Williamson struck out swinging.
Teykl walked. Well, a baserunner at least. So much for the perfect game.
Byrd ground out to 2B.
Still not a single hard hit ball. Come on, guys-- wake up...before it's too late.

Down 0-2 heading to the top of the fourth inning.

We always have trouble with these guys. Today it's not like we are starting someone who hasn't pitched all year or is at the end of our bench. Good thing we don't have some sort of trophy for the winner of the series each year.03-banghead

Nice quick inning by Duplantier. He is going to be a fun one to watch the next 3 years.

Offense needs to get going...zero hits so far. I was hoping this year would be different and we wouldn't be a feast or famine offense.

Aquino doubles home Cook for the Owls' first run. 2-1 Kats. Michael on 2B, 1 down. Reeves up.

Cook single, balk, fly-out by Ewing and a Double by Aquino puts Rice on the board, 1-out, man on 2nd... at least according to gametracker...

Appears the game plan is to pitch by committee today, so that everyone is available for the weekend. Jon Duplantier took the hill to begin the fourth, and induced a quick 1-2-3 inning, our first of the game (fly out, strikeoutK, ground out).

Cook leadoff, opposite field single. That's a start...and advances to 2B on balk.
Ewing flied out to LF.
Aquino RBI double down the 3B line! 02-13-banana Yeah!
Reeves ground out to 3B. Runner on 2B, two outs.
Stainback grounded out to 2B. Too many ground balls.

Down 1-2 heading to the top of the fifth, and with SHS sending up the top of their order.

With the batting helmet color combination the Kats sport a very nice Oriole look with their unis. They should use that for their hats as well.

Great poise by the Freshman-- after surrendering back-to-back ground singles with one out, Jon strikes out the cleanup hitter, then induces a fly out to end the threat. Well done.

Hoelscher ground out to SS.
Williams bunt out to pitcher.
Teykl ground out to 2B.
Going down like flies. Just too easy against a pitcher who has been mauled in his two prior appearances this year. Can we please make the adjustments the 3rd time through the lineup???

Down 1-2 heading to the top of the sixth inning.

I was looking for the same from the Bearkats, but their starter is still in. From your later comment, it looks like Rice is just struggling with a pitcher they should be feasting on...

Jon gives up a two-out walk to the #8 hitter, but gets out of the inning with no further damage (fly out, strikeoutKK, ground out).

Third time through the order-- time for an eruption (or at least some signs of life from the offense)!
Byrd struck out swinging.
Cook flied out to RF.
Ewing foul pop to C.
This is just too easy. Our batters are sleepwalking through this game.

Down 1-2 heading to the top of the seventh inning.
