John Dingell to Retire After Nearly 60 Years in House
rood riddance.

Quote:John Dingell to Retire After Nearly 60 Years in House

WASHINGTON — Representative John D. Dingell Jr., Democrat of Michigan, the longest-serving member of Congress in history, on Monday was expected to announce that he will not seek re-election in 2014, and will leave Congress in 2015.

Mr. Dingell, 87, has served in the House for more than 58 years, under 11 presidents.

He made his first appearance on the House floor at the age of 6, when his father was elected in 1933; he went on to become a congressional page; and after his father died in 1955 he successfully ran for his seat at the age of 29.

there not much difference between this and hereditary monarchs . . .

Quote:It is widely expected that Dingell's wife, Democratic National Committee member and former General Motors executive Debbie Dingell, will run for his seat. Debbie Dingell mulled a run for Michigan's open Senate seat earlier this year before deciding not to run. Dingell's congressional seat is safely Democratic.

debbie dingell is going to run for her husband, john's, former seat. John won a special election in 1955 to replace his father, who died in office.

I hope for the sake of Michiganders that the dingells have little dingells to represent them safely into the future.

Never seen a better case for term limits since FDR.

Debbie Dingell is the overwhelming favorite to win the seat in November. She is 59 years old, and -- simply based on age -- she might plausibly hold the seat for at least 18 years.

If that actually happens, then the Dingell family will have held a Michigan congressional seat for 100 consecutive years.
