Obviously you can assure recruits that the head coach will be here if they sign...and the salary is probably still well below what it should be now for an extra year. They may have wanted to increase the buyout and giving Carey another year was one way to draw up a new contract.
I actually think Frazier knows what he's doing so I have no problem with it. If Compher had done this I would've been more confused.
+1 when a kid commits to a coach/school for 5 years, they want to know the school is committed to the coach. You can't put Carey on probation, then at the same time expect recruiting to continue improving. This is the right move that all winning program do.

Should the coach be extended every year because they recruit new kids every year?

This whole discussion is really hypothetical and dumb. The number of wins isn't a set number. If we're winning 8-10 games, contending for or going to MACC's every year, playing in good bowl games, having academic success, having recruiting success, increasing other metrics related to the team, etc etc etc...then sure, extend him every year for all I care. Giving the guy a one year extension and a small pay raise doesn't make a big difference in the scheme of things. If we have great success then he'll get offered a huge pay raise by another program and he'll leave anyway. In the meantime keep him happy and let the program keep rolling in the right direction.

I think this is Frazier saying if you keep us near the top of the league and win you get raises. I have no problem with that. We still won 12 games this year and beat two BIG team so I think a small bump is warranted. Money aside, I would be much more interested to know what type of buyout exists and if that changed at all with the extension.

You should be given a raise based on YOUR abilities and performance. He won a lot of games this year with other coaches recruits, he lost the 3 biggest games he coached and was 83rd in the nation in recruiting ranking. What are we rewarding? WE should have paid the guys before him more and kept them.

There was no way in hell NIU could afford to pay to keep Doeren or Kill. Paying them an extra 50-100K wasn't changing anything. Unless you happen to have a few million dollars to spare for the Athletic department there was no way those guys were sticking around.
You have no clue what you're talking about.

If NIU is really focused on becoming elite in the MAC, moving on to another conference it will need to rise above your level of thinking. If you really want to keep DD you find a way to do so. How much money was raised for the east side expansion, 10 million+? How much money was raised to build the convo center, 30 million+? Football facilities expansion, millions. Your mindset is, well we're just this mid-major that can't afford to keep a good coach. If we remain in this mindset we will never achieve better than what we have. If we have made a mistake with this coach, it will set us back 10-15 years. If he finds a way to win, he will leave. More money for a good head coach must be part of the business plan. Its developing that plan and showing stakeholders (interested alums and newly interested alums) that there is a ROI if we keep good coaches and keep winning. And by the way, I do have a clue. I make my living by raising funds for far riskier ventures than finding a million dollars for a coaching project. But thanks for the insult, it keeps the level of conversation a such a high point.

And speak of the devil. Jerry just went from $1.2M to $2.1M a year.

With the Kill situation it was a good thing NIU was not able to pay him, I don't think NIU has any MAC championships if he stays.

There's no way NIU wins the MAC in 2011 if Kill is the coach. Not with the offense he ran. That game in the Glass Bowl would have been an L.

RE: Carey Contract Extended
Even if NIU were able to match Kill's or Doeren's contracts, do you think they would rather coach in the MAC vs ACC or Big 10? And even if we pay the Head coach 1.6, should we bump up the position coached too, you know just to field a better team?
I'm good with giving Cary a bump. I do think it's the coaching staff as a whole. Cary runs the ship and directs the coaches to stay on track. A couple of questionable calls happens at every level.
