What moves the dial for local newspapers?
I listened to radio broadcast in Indianapolis the other day when the Indianapolis Star Sports Editor was interviewed. I know Ryan has been through a lot with the loss of his Mother. I was impressed with the compassion expressed on this board for Ryan and his family, I would like to express my sympathy for Ryan and his family as we'll. Losing "Mom" is a significant loss for everyone. Hang in there Ryan.
I would like Ryan's perspective on the topic when able.
When asked to rank the top 5 sporting events, characters, or teams that move the dial for the Indianapolis Star, the Sports Editor mentioned the following:
1. Indianapolis Colts
2. Indiana University Basketball
3. Indianapolis Pacers
4. Indy 500 Race
5. High School sports/recruiting
No Purdue sports, Notre Dame sports, Butler, wildlife, Peyton Manning, etc...
I just found it interesting. Indianapolis is a different athletic venue than Toledo, which would make the discussion more interesting.
Thoughts?

Not a very good comparison. Indy is a pro sports town
And note IU ahead of local school Butler

RE: What moves the dial for local newspapers?
That is actually what makes it interesting. I believe the UT Rockets are the premier team in Toledo, but the Mud Hens and the Walleye have a nice following. Lake Erie is hard to ignore, so fishing may actually be an important sports industry locally. Outside of these considerations tOSU, UM, and BGsucks have significant fan bases present in the area. NBA, NFL, MLB franchises are within 1 - 2 hours (Lions, Browns, Tigers, Indians, Cavs, and Pistons). How are these teams, etc.. viewed by the sports editor?
What is the Blade's top five. No agenda here, just interested.
To say this is not a good comparison is a little crazy, but the dynamics are different. I enjoyed hearing the sports editor's opinion. Was the UT win over BG first page sports news today?
Go Rockets!!

I think if you ask the people on this board, UT is the premier team in Toledo. I would say most of the general public is split between OSU and Michigan. The Mud Hens and Walleye don't really have a following. People attend Walleye and Mud Hens game for family entertainment reasons, not so much their record, and that is the way they are marketed. I think the general public treats UT the same. When the record is good, people show up. When the teams are mediocre or below, attendance drops. As far as pro sports go; no one cares about the Cavs since LeBron left, the Tigers are very popular, there are a lot of Browns and Lions fans but their teams are never any good. If I were going to rank the Blade's Top teams, it would be more in tiers than a top 5:
1. OSU, Michigan, and the occasional top ranked high school sport's team
2. Tigers, Lions, and Browns
3. Toledo, BGSU, Mudhens, and Walleye
4. Indians, Cavs, and Pistons

In Kalamazoo it seems to be:
Michigan/Michigan State
Detroit Pro teams
Local High schools
WMU
K Wings
Of course The Gazette is no longer a Kalamazoo based paper but rather the Kalamazoo edition for the MLive group, as decisions are made at corporate HQ as much as by the local people.
