August the next timeframe for any P5 movement with the NCAA...
From the article:
Hatch said that under the new structure, the bigger conferences would have more flexibility, but just how much more is what the committee is in the process of determining. They wouldn't, for example, be allowed to change academic standards, or allow more scholarships for a given sport.
"There's a range of things that would not be under autonomy," he said. "Trying to distinguish what is and what isn't is our current challenge. We hope the board can approve this by the summer."

My assumption is that the G5 could have the option to follow the P5 lead on things like stipends and hiring additional coaches--but that's never been made real clear.

I believe that will be the case. The main thing is that the G5 (or rest of Division I) can't *block* the P5 from instituting certain procedures. If the P5 wants to pay $500,000 for cost of attendance to each player (using an extreme example), they can do it. The G5 conferences would have no power to stop that from happening. However, if an individual G5 conference wants to institute the same thing to match the P5, then they're allowed to do so.

There will have to be limits though even on that. Otherwise the G5 would allow the P5 to pretty much price the rest of us out of FBS.
I still think the cost of scholarships junk is going to end up being the end of college football as we know it.

Entrained apocalyptic thinking.
College football "as we know it" has already ended. College football today is a much different game than it used to be so what's it matter if it changes some more? It will still be college football.

I have no problem with schools paying thier players cost for whatever. The fact is that when you go beyond the limits of that it will only magnify the flaws in the player. The NFL is filled with players who were payed millions of dollars only to wind up broke. There should be a way to help players but excess will only lead to unsolvable problems. In the end this would change nothing . The top teams would remain where they are . Schools would only spend money in vain chasing an illusion.

I have "known" (and loved) college football since the 50's. Greed, corruption and hypocrisy, have unfortunately always been a part of it. The only changes are the fact that it's getting worse as the money becomes greater and the strategies employed by those on top to maintain their position. I never cared a tinker's dam about pro sports and if the day ever comes when my school is completely and officially barred from national championships, I will turn my back on the college game too.
