Both teams were slipping. They didn't roll the field before the game it looked like - the turf was really matted down.

Why don't we have grass at HRS?

It would make renting out the field for HS games difficult. Many area HS district stadiums have gone or are going to artificial turf so the field can be used many times a week for multiple HSs, JV games, etc.

Actually it is FieldTurf not Astroturf:
Quote:. The stadium features a synthetic FieldTurf playing surface, spacious locker rooms and a four-level press box, which features a stadium club for VIPs. The playing surface, which had been natural grass through the 2004 season, was replaced with the new FieldTurf surface that is used in more than 25 NCAA Division IA football stadiums.
Liberty Bowl

Nope.

Quote:The 59,308-seat facility features a new AstroTurf surface, spacious locker rooms and a four-level press box which features a VIP stadium club. Recently added to other NFL and university stadiums as well, the new AstroTurf field was installed at the Liberty Bowl in 2012.

Interesting that we chose to change to the same playing surface as the field we played our worst game in years on.

DOH!!!

How often does that happen? 1-2 times a year?

I assume you mean Rice renting out the field for events other than Rice football and not multiple events per week in HS stadiums?

I don't know the exact number, but it's certainly more than twice per year. I seem to remember multiple HS games in a day during the HS playoffs.

Even one time in a rainstorm on a Friday night resulting in a meesed up field for a Saturday afternoon Rice game would be a shame.

Let's hope JK can get us back to hosting HS games and other events that will bring a paycheck...another Greenspan failure in chasing away that business.

OK guys maybe I missed it but will the new turf be installed before the Rice pro day in March? I sure hope so because there are quite a few senior who will be working out. If not, does anyone know what the backup plan is?

QUICK UPDATE- Just saw Durate's tweet that said it is suppose to be finished by March 11th. I hope so :)

I'd suspect the back-up plan is the grass or track or worst case (weather)... Reliant bubble

Philip (and the other seniors) should get a souvenir scrap if he wants it. Shoot, the whole team should get the option.

Per twitter, the recent former players appear to approve.

AstroTurf! Sounds like a great sponsor for our new bowl, a reconstituted Astro(turf)-Bluebonnet Bowl in HRS.

RE: New Turf at HRS
Meet the new turf, same as the old turf.

Not that I'm complaining; I think our field and our stadium in general are clean, crisp, and classic.

The change in hue between the nice new endzones and the faded old tarps makes me cringe a little, but hopefully renovations will get rid of that problem.
