If Roney moves into a starter role, who will be the closer? Livingston or Giannini or Johnson?
I like Johnson a lot and I think he could be successful as a middle reliever or closer.
We've seen the middle relief role doesn't suit Giannini. He struggles with inheriting runners and can't seem to find any consistency. I think he's got the stuff to be a starter. If not, I could definitely see him as a closer.
I don't know if Roney will be moved to a starting role but I like the idea of trying it.
Giannini was used as a starter for his 2013 Summer league team and was unhittable at times. Also started games during Fall practice so it looked like they were trying to move him to the rotation. Not sure if that's still in their plans.
Forgot he started in summer leagues.
Granted, I don't know from experience but it seems like it would take a different mindset to be a middle reliever. You rarely know when you are going to pitch or for how long. You could pitch on Tuesday for five innings. Or maybe you won't throw for another week and you will be called on to throw on back to back nights for one inning each. You may inherit bases loaded with nobody out. You may come in to start an inning. Who knows? There's not a lot of predictability and I could see how some players can't deal with that.
I just know that at the beginning last year, Giannini looked untouchable.

IMO, the best part of what you said was alluding to psyche.....anyone that ever played baseball past the age of 5 realized that.....they're static and get to think .....ya nailed it IMO and why our coaching staff is stooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooopid

Looks like we're down a man at DH. Heard from a reliable source that Jared Bales is done as a player at Southern Miss due to ongoing back problems. Really hate it for him. He was a Freshman All-American at catcher and hasn't been healthy since.

From what I heard, the fact that he was even able to come back last year was pretty remarkable.
Tough break for the kid. I especially hate the, "How good could he have been if not for...." kind of injuries. Bales is definitely one of those. He had a lot of promise.

I have a good friend that lives around the corner from Bales' parents so I heard about him before he played an inning for USM. He's been my favorite player on the team because of that connection.
Not as excited about the season opener now.

Ruh roh ... sounds like our pitches have been having injury problems--via this article from the HA...which effectively answers none of our questions going into the season: http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/artic...rt-than-13 .
It reads as though Berry may be somewhat delusional about last year's finish to compare it to 2009.

Who? None of these guys sound familiar-- did any pitch last year? Any of them JUCO transfers?

Cameron Giannini will be making his first career start after 30 relief appearances over the past two years.
Taylor Nunez redshirted last year due to an arm injury. Pitched in 8 games as a true freshman in 2012. Drafted in the 19th round by the Pirates coming out of high school.
Christian Talley is a JUCO transfer from PRCC. Drafted by Tampa Bay in the 26th round of the 2013 MLB draft.

Conor Fisk would be our ace....but he's reportedly suspended for the weekend.
Nunez was pretty much unhittable his freshman year. Of course, that was largely due to the fact that he rarely threw anything in the strike zone. I believe this play by play from his start at LSU is an accurate summation of his career so far.
LSU 1st - Jones, J grounded out to 2b (1-1). Dozar walked (3-0). Katz hit by pitch (3-2); Dozar advanced to second. Nola walked (3-1); Katz advanced to second; Dozar advanced to third. Moore walked, RBI (3-1); Nola advanced to second; Katz advanced to third; Dozar scored. Livingston to p for Nunez.
Really though, he and Giannini both have good stuff but simply haven't been able to "put it together." Nunez hasn't really found it at all. Giannini will look untouchable for a week and then not be able to get outs for the next month.

Any insight into why Fisk was pulled when the game was tied and it looked like he was getting stronger?

yep....knew it was coming....I hate the pitch count....really do
it puts that limitation thing in one's head before they even warm-up...
think about it...when does warming up throwing 30 or so pitches start to become a problem...
not getting on you....I just can't stand the pitch count factor....it didn't exist in my day....you either had it or you didn't...and if you had it, you stayed in the game

He had it and was on his way to a win as after that first inning letdown the Cajuns could do absolutely nothing against him and all the momentum was in USM's favor. Taking him out was the game changer.
Having said all that, thank you.
