RE: Rice @ Southern Miss
Guercy hits his 5th three pointer of the game, but Southern Miss keeps hitting threes of their own. 52-41

USM's radio guy said that it's a good referee crew tonight, and immediately mentioned Kelly Self. I would have to respectively disagree with him.

His defense has been excellent today, but he's having a pretty anemic night on the offensive end. Doesn't look like someone who has put up 25 in a game before.

Guercy gave up the ball in the backcourt but got back to break up an alley-oop. Impressive athleticism.

Obi with the three point plays temporarily stops the bleeding. 68-54 now

72-59 after a Ramljak three...scoring pretty well thanks to hitting our threes at a good rate, but we can't get consistent stops

With 4 minutes to play, Rice 2-6 from the line. USM 18-24. That's pretty much the difference in the score. Reflects are lack of will to take it to he hole.

Final: 84-62...Didn't even play that poorly for 3/4 of the game, just overmatched and couldn't keep them off the boards or the scoreboard. Pretty clear what the limitations of this team are

Horseshit.

Represents being out-athleted in the post. We drive the ball and give it away because our better opponents have the size to not need to attack our drivers.

Our biggest needs are big athletic forwards. We seem to get good enough guards and surprisingly a big rebounder (Kazemi & Obi) but since they can't dominate offensively it makes our lack of inside scoring by forwards is even more critical. We have to get to the line close to what our opponent does.

Even Reischel, Chadwick, and Ibrahim didn't have the skill set needed. Ibrahim perhaps could have developed into a good big forward but he had no interest in being at Rice.

Look. your welcome to your opinion as am I. But if you are going to result to profanity, go join your favorite ESU board.

I've been to all but 1 home games plus the Toyota game vs UH so far this season. That's the way I see it from my 3rd row seat. We are content to shoot the 3, and when we we do on occasion take it inside, the layups are usually soft, not with authority. You'll never get many calls that way. I'll agree USM probably out athletes us across the board, but it was the same story vs FAU and others less athletic teams this year.

I agree, but I'm just trying to say that getting free throws isn't as easy as just forcing the ball low, esp against multiple long disciplined defensive forwards like USM has.

Yeah, and it hurts because our lone big man (now Obi) just gets collapsed on when he gets the ball, because we have no other forward threat and rarely anyone slashing to the basket. So our big men have to shoot quickly or kick it back out, which is a lower percentage play

We are also poor at setting screens thus negating pick and rolls.

FIFY?

FWIW, USM was called for 13 fouls compared to the Owls' 19 ... but the Eagles got 26 FTAs to Rice's 6.

Braun still generally refusing to put two big guys in the game at the same time? This frustrated me all 3 of Kazemi's seasons at Rice.
