Propst took Hoover from a team that was on par with the other, average teams in its class to, for lack of a better example, Bama status. You had people & businesses pouring their resources into the program and drawing in families wanting to play at the "best" high school program all while using questionable tactics and with little oversight... you can't do that at UAB.

Niblett took over a program that already had everything and maintains it today with superior athletes and resources... opposite of the current UAB situation.

The local media is very "surfacey" with their analysis of what UAB needs: they win, they'd be cheap, they know high school coaches so surely he can recruit.

You want a successful high school coach with bad facilities? Jerry Hood at Clay-Chalkville.

Having said that, I don't want a high school coach, either.

Neal or Summers would have the best insight into what UAB could do to make UAB successful. You've been at UAB, you've been somewhere else more successful, and you know what you're stepping into.

You need a personality that the current players can feel comfortable around. The guys at Oregon love coach Neal... don't know about Summers... maybe someone here knows more about his personality.

I am not pushing Niblett at all but I think he is a great coach, would like him as a coordinator but don't think he would come for that. I understand Hoover has a lot of talent but it is not like the have 10-15 players signing D1 every year. They usually have a couple of superstars and a lot of role players. I think Niblett is good at coaching them up. He has won everywhere he has been (Oneonta and Oxford were not that good before he coached there)

I know Coach Niblett's track record. He is a great coach, a great person, and the players absolutely love to play for him. He's in the weight room lifting with his teams, he brings a nice sound system to games for his players to listen to music when they are going through warm-ups, he's an outspoken Christian with the fire of Coach O and real leadership abilities. He would definitely change the culture around UAB.

If I were to interview him, the first thing I'd ask is how do you plan to compete with less depth of talent and worse facilities than your competition... then I'd ask who his assistants would be. If you can't get quick, specific answers then he's not UAB's man... that goes for any coach Mackin interviews.

RE: Alabama13 Blog: UAB Football has potential; Blazers should hire Josh Niblett
There is no question that Josh Niblett is a GREAT high school coach and he has the record at more than Hoover to prove it. I don't know that he would translate well into the UAB position though. The best high school players are the average for college recruits in a process where each level's best becomes the average at the next highest level. Successful coaches are those who can accurately judge how much "upside" a player has left to grow and then bring it out of them. Some "great" high school players are as good as they can get and therefore don't excel at college.

UAB needs to hire a coach who can gain the respect and best efforts from our recruits and present players. I hope our AD and the rest of those making the decision get it right for the sake of the program. We need to win and to do it in 2014.

Just keep on laughing, flinging, ducking and joking -- all the way to Legion Field for UAB games for the foreseeable future. We should have tailgating pretty well refined there by 2020.

As am I - in fact I heard his voice in my head while typing that quote. Was he one of Mel Blanc's voices?

And even he ended up forfeiting a season right?

Ask if any of the teams they played that year if they remember the ass-kicking they took.
