He was not in the same position as Jimbo Fisher.
Jimbo Fisher was an assistant that actually called plays on offense as a coordinator under 2 different successful head coaches and on 2 national championship teams.
McGee was a freshman hot-head QB that got busted for theft and got taken under the wing of Petrino and followed him around ever since, never calling plays or being an actual full-blown offensive coordinator.
Completely different scenario actually.
Talk about cheap shots. Bringing up his youth now is classless.
It was brought up many times when he was hired.

I didn't mean their backgrounds were identical. I mean they were both highly regarded assistants nationally, and a lot of people were interested in hiring them as head coaches.

Still classless. He did it, so I did it and that makes it ok.

Keep whining.
Perhaps it is classless (I don't), but it does paint a bigger picture.
I was stating the condition McGee was in when he first met the guy he left to coach under.
Troubled youth who is saved by Petrino? It's no wonder McGee is the way he is. I don't blame McGee for it, his mentor was Bobby Petrino. If there is one coach that you don't want to model yourself after, it's Bobby Petrino. Hell, he even pulled the Atlanta Falcons exit on UAB.
I was making a point that it was NOT the same situation and not even close to the same backgrounds.

RE: John Neal should be our next HC.
I really do apologize if I was classless or appeared to be.
My intention was not to beat him up on his past (it's not like I want people to judge me for mine), but to mention it in relation to how he met Petrino. He was in trouble, Petrino came in as a role-model/savior which explains some of his traits. That is all.

We need a charismatic, outgoing leader who has connections with high school coaches in our region. We need someone who can tap local businesses for funding. We need someone who can get into the community and talk to people who have money. We need someone who believes in the players we have now, rather than hoping for better recruits down the road.
I'll be honest, I wouldn't mind someone with the fire of Josh Niblett leading our program... he definitely couldn't do any worse than McGee or Callaway.
What's Jim Hilyer up to these days?
Hilyer is a great guy, but he's like 75 years old.
Bill Snyder is about that age and wins a lot of games
What's wrong with 75? Are you discriminating on age?

Neal should have been the hire last time.

Oregon passed on promoting John Neal. There are a few upset fans.

Mentioning an early UAB coach reminds me - where is Cale Gundy now? He was one of our first OCs and left early for UOK. Should he be included in our mix of prospective replacements?

Gundy is the OC at Oklahoma, I believe is his title.
Makes more there than he would here probably.

After what UOK's offense did in the Sugar Bowl, he might at least warrant a call - if not to hire then at least for recommendations.

Turns out he is the RB coach at Oklahoma.
Makes just under $20,000 a month or $240,000 a year thereabouts.
Not sure if he would leave his alma mater for a HC job here, but it wouldn't hurt to keep him in mind.

RE: John Neal should be our next HC.
Looks like LB and Recruiting Coordinator, Don Pellum will be named Oregon's DC.
The timing could be right for John Neal this time around. I am partial because I played for him, but he is a solid candidate. He is 54 or 55 (maybe 56). If you wonder about his energy, google him and watch some videos. There were several of him and UO coach Scott Frost had. I also remember Finebaum interviewing him a year or two ago and Finebaum was very impressed. I don't think Neal would be looking to jump in a couple years. this could be his last job (7-10 years). He would bring a winning attitude, great experience, knowledge of UAB and our recruiting base and stability. He also knows he can win at UAB. He would be willing to listen. I can guarantee that.
I think he at least deserves to be considered/interviewed. That being said I wish Mackin and the search committee the best in getting us the right coach.
Of the candidates I hear, there are some good ones besides Neal.
Jim Leavitt - built USF from worse facilities than UAB (obviously different with fL recruits and pro stadium to use)
Orgeron - would he consider? It would be a splash, but I am not sure we can afford. He is a little quirky, but it would be a splash hire
Bill Clark - not sure 600k buy-out makes sense for us
Josh Niblett- we could pay 300k and probably get more wins that new did with McGee or Callaway. Maybe we get lucky and he wins 7-8 and we look like geniuses.
That being said, I support our search team and look forward to the future with our new coach.

It is my understanding that if Clark is hired before Feb 1, there is no buyout.
