What does the drop in this ranking -- #16 in 2001 to #31 in 2013 -- mean for UAB in laymen's terms? For instance, does it partially explain the recent absence of numerous construction cranes on the campus?

They're about to start some pretty big building projects on campus soon. HUC is already in progress, new dorms about to start (or may have already, haven't been on campus in a while). The new art building is almost done, and on the corner of 18th and university they're going to build a new research complex and the scrushy building was recently expanded.

I would imagine the new $50million item in the Scrushy building(I can't think of what it is) they built/bought will help with future grant funding...

As of Monday they hadn't broke ground on the dorm, but the parking lot is closed off. I would image work will begin very soon.
