RE: Rice vs Harvard
Good points FBO. They play without a true center but everyone in the starting 5 can slash to the basket. We lack a player the size of Seth who has the speed and agility to do that so even throwing the ball in to Obi results in him having to take a shot or kicking it out while Harvard could also hit the cutter to the basket.

Denzel Davis showed that ability in HS. Whether he can translate that from HS to D1 level, especially with losing a year, is obviously tbd.

RE: Rice vs Harvard
There seems to be a lot of problems with both Men and Women basketball. When was the last time we went to the NCAA tournament. I think that is the most embarrassing of everything. Has there been any comment out of the new AD about Rice basketball? Also, has he tried to meet the Owl Club members and contributors to discuss his vision is and answer questions?

Almost as if they didn't have tickets printed/their cash registers weren't working. Simple solution in the case of a malfunctioning cash register would be to have the employees stand at the doors and those patrons that had cash could simply hand them a 10 and walk in. Instead, they decided to continue "executing" whatever process they deemed more efficient, causing people (including Jeff van Gundy himself) to exit the line and home. Glad we are experts at finding any solution to salvage some ticket revenue from this game.
Even better, for a game like this, just open the door and let the riff raff in rather than making people stand in line that long. I'd imagine that the revenue from concessions would more than make up for the loss in ticket sales.
They showed JVG on TV, at least late in the 2nd half. He may've had an alternate path in side.

That looked like a really good idea (inviting the Brass Band). For any game where the MOB may not make it in numbers, I think this would make a great substitute.

The Texas brass is great. I don't have any problems with the BOB during basketball season but it would be nice if our cheerleaders, mascot and dance team would show up to a game or two this year.

Honestly, Smithers, I don't know why Harvard even bothered to show up. They barely even won!

I'm impressed that men's basketball still has 75 season ticket holders.

The ticket window fiasco was frustrating and embarrassing. JVG (and Mrs. JVG, I surmise) were directly behind my boys and me when we finally got to the window (around 7:25, despite getting in line before 6:55). So, I would be surprised if JVG went home without seeing the game, since he was standing in line for over 30 minutes, and finally got to the front of the line (after my boys and I got our ducats).

wow just wow, for all the issues with revenue for this to be a problem is really sad. The reality is until matters change a lot, they ought to simplify tickets to lower deck one side or the other, upper deck one side or the other and end court.
I have made it to 4 games this year and twice folks have been in my seats on the lower side and I just sat one row up or down.....

RE: Rice vs Harvard
On ESPN radio this morning, the local sportscenter announced that Rice beat Harvard 69-54. That station is owned by same group that owns our flagship 1560, so that is at least good propaganda support from our media partner.
I don't know if they said on New Year's Day that we had won the Liberty Bowl 44-7 over Mississippi State.

A really simple answer to the ticket window issue...get season tickets.
I'm surprised JVG doesn't have season tickets. He's at most of our home games.

I'm surprised he doesn't have a standing invite to any Rice sporting event he wants to attend, gratis (or UH for that matter). It seems like professional courtesy would be enough to warrant that.

Maybe he does, and he was just waiting to pick them up?
Interesting concept though...how big of a name former coach/player would warrant a free pass?

A former NBA coach who likes the program, and who might be persuaded to coach an NCAA team again one day to fulfill his passion for teaching in an enjoyable, less stressful environment would certainly be high on my qualifications list for free passes.

Change NBA to NFL. Would Kubiak get freebies?

Well, if your son is on the team, I think he gets player passes.
But once your son is graduated, yeah, I think I'd make sure Gary Kubiak was on the pass list.

RE: Rice vs Harvard
It's not so much a hedge on maybe wanting him to play a role down the line, nor is it the celebrity that I mentioned, but he's built a relationship with Ben Braun and James Dickey, at least according to the broadcast for the Harvard game the other day.
edit: rethinking this, ethics rules may preclude comped tickets. When I was a kid, the Denver Broncos gave out a ton of tickets to local media, and my dad would take us to games with those. When I was 7 or 8 or so, the newspaper came back and said that they would no longer allow employees to accept tickets like that, but they'd give them the option to buy the tickets. We had the option of deciding whether we wanted an allowance or Broncos tickets, and it was kind of a no-brainer... and I think that was still at a time when the Broncos had never had a winning season. Even though he doesn't necessarily cover Rice, they may have ethics considerations in the mix.

I would hope Dr.K could count on Van Gundy for his insight if we make a coaching change.
