Tubberville is making much more than previous coaches, which probably means they have much less money to pay assistants. Maybe Hughes is one of the only guys they talked to willing to work for the salary provided.
When Kaufman was here he was making $350,000/year. Not sure what they are paying Hughes, but I think Prunty is making something in the neighborhood of $300,000.
UC is paying its assistants as well as any team in the G5. That being said, we don't have the resources to outbid a coach from a P5 program. Those schools are making 10X as much a year on TV contract alone.
After we fired Kaufman he went from making $309,487 at UC in 2013 to $550,000 per year for a two year contract with a 340k school buyout after year #1. We showed him.
Per Cliff Peale in the Enquirer on 8/11/13 ("Tuberville's coaches to take home $2 million") UC had a $2.1 million assistant salary pool in 2013. Gran made $305,128. Prunty made $261,538. Guessing with the savings from paying Hughes less and then giving Prunty a raise it is still right about there.
Cost of living in the San Francisco area makes the pay increase relatively neutral. But still at this point I'd be happy paying Kaufman that amount to bring him back to Cincinnati and kick Hughes to the curb.
I wouldn't bring Kaufman back. I don't want to get to a point where we are a revolving door at DC, but Hughes can't make it past this season.
I agree. They can do much better than Hughes. His resume speaks for itself.

BTW...I just noticed that Hughes and Prunty are listed as Co-Defensive Coordinators on gobearcats.com. I did not know that.

RE: Art Kaufman/Fred Tate Gone
You guys know that I have been around here for over a decade. I always do my damndest not to bash, to the point where many posters, most notably the late Chatter, characterize me as a homer.
I have always attempted to back my optimism with reasons for it. Examples might include "basketball is a long season and some of the players are young; there will be a lot of improvement", or, "we may have lost a couple, but make a couple plays, and it is a completely different game."
Anyway... this defense is just plain bad. There has not been a lick of improvement at all. Maybe the DBs are playing better than vs. Toledo, but that is only because, in that game, they couldn't play much worse. I don't have ANY reason to be optimistic about this defense.
I don't even believe the scheme is 100% to blame. Our defensive tackles on the inside, simply are not ready. And the two JUCOs who were supposed to help haven't been a bit of help so far this year, mainly because they came so late. I don't even think they are playing. But, since most of our offense returns next year, I guess I'll suffer through this mess, and see how the middle stacks up next year, with two hopefully better DTs, Mouhon at the Mike, and MOST HOPEFULLY, a new DC.

RE: Art Kaufman/Fred Tate Gone
After watching the game again the biggest problems were 1) missed tackles 2) OSU's uptempo play calling.
There were multiple run plays where we had guys stopped for a couple of yards and they got 7, and we missed
a couple of sacks on Barrett. We had limited chances to substitute also.
They ran that inside power play with a guard pulling, in 3-4 WR set, and got a hat on a hat. Even if we wanted to bring in a 3rd LB it would have not mattered much.

How about running some stunts or twists with the DL to try and get penetration? it seemed like every snap, the DL was literally taking on the blockers in front of them instead of trying to confuse a young OL with some type of movement? How about a run blitz, or a corner blitz on those rare 3rd and longs? it wasn't just the lack of pressure that killed the D, it was the lack of creativity or scheme in trying to generate pressure.

Our inability to recruit DT's during the past fours is years is taking a toll on us. For whatever reason, we just couldn't get them to come here (not including 5th year senior transfers). I can remember commenting back then it was going to be a problem for us.
2010 (Fifth Year Senior)- In fairness this is class that Kelly bailed on and Butch had to rebuild in short order. Kelly recruited Cameron Beard and Butch came in late and picked up Roney Lozano (an off the grid pickup btw) from Miami Central. Lozano was a bust.
2011- We only took one DT in this class- Brandon Mitchell. That was not enough fat bodies on the line even then.
2012- Another year with only one DT- Alex Pace. Two DT's in two years is a problem. It was not as if we were loaded at the position at the time.
2013- Another transition year. Butch left us no DT's and Tuberville could not get one year in the short time he had to recruit (in fairness he picked up a 5th year senior transfer Marquis Aiken).

I would like to see a little more of that. Still got to tackle though.

At least our defense didn't give up the NCAA record for passing yards this week like Kaufman's did

Connor Holiday is AVERAGING (!) 61 pass attempts a game so far this year...how is his arm still attached?

Cornerback has also been under-recruited over the past few years. Right now we have a walk on and JUCO starters backed up by a true freshman after the converted safety to CB starter got hurt.

Doesn't help that the best corner on our team (Trenier Orr) left the program and our best CB commit since I've watched the team reopened his recruitment a month ago.
