We still suck, but we suck less! SUCK LESS! It's exciting to say that.
Sounds like our next marketing motto. "Come to see the basketball team in Dekalb! We suck less than usual!".
Seriously, even against less than good competition I never would have guessed we'd start the season at 5-5. Hope they can keep that up.
Huskies now 165 in the RPI, and have finally cracked the top half of college basketball. That's coming a long way form being almost dead last in RPI last year. NIU has already faced #2 UMass and now get another top 10 RPI team on New Years eve with the #7 Cyclones
I don't care a rabbit turd about RPI this early in the year. It's probably oddly inflated by the blowout loss to UMass, though I'm not going to bother trying to break it down. Watch the games, make judgements.
The Huskies are doing some things better (turnovers are down, useful height and rebounding are up, interior scoring is up, beating bad teams) but they have a long way to go (the offense still dies rather easily on a lot of possessions, they've shot free throws well exactly once, there's certainly more but I'm going off the top of my head).
I'm impressed that they've come out of a stretch of 3 road games with 2 wins, that's nice to see. But I said it before the year, I wanted to reserve judgement until the Huskies get about halfway through the MAC schedule or so.
I'm optimistic for the first time in a while, but anybody can win a few games here or there. Consistency is the key. If I see the offense actually look good for a few weeks in a row (clunkers do happen), then I'll really get exctied.
I think what you are forgetting where this team is coming from. Were your hopes that NIU would go from a 5 win team to a 20 win team in one season. Im not sure where your expecations were set and where your excited meter is, but I think you have to be realistic as a fan. Anyone with realistic expectations would be overjoyed at this season so far. Looking beyond this year, then I think you can look toward loftier goals like a MAC title contender.

I'm happy a step has been taken, but it's a tall stair case. I just wanted to see a reason to keep Monty this year. Thus far, it looks like the needle is pointing up. All good. Gravy.
