Doerns first year 3-9
I always have a HUGE problem with Doren leaving before the Orange Bowl. He stayed for Wisconsin's bowl game when he was named NIU head coach but couldn't stay for the biggest game in NIU history.

Didn't he announce he was leaving before we knew about the OB?

I would have to look at the timeline but everyone knew that there was an outside chance for a BCS Bowl, I knew it so he most certainly did. no matter what we had a bowl game guaranteed coming up and he made a choice to skip it. Unlike what he did when he was a just a coordinator at Wisconsin.

He was set to receive a bonus for making a BCS bowl. He knew he was going to receive a payday from N.C. State and decided to leave NIU with the 700k buyout and not havin to pay a 100k plus BCS bonus. Not really a stab in the back as you say. He could have stayed and picked up a check and then leave. Dave was a good guy. Stuck with Wisc through the Rose Bowl. Staying at NIU would have cost us more than it was worth.

No way would NC State have accepted that arrangement. Coaches have to leave early for recruiting and whatnot.

But he didn't leave Wisconsin early.

True point, but the thought was coaching in the Rose Bowl would improve his standing and help recruiting and whatnot. It got mentioned on national tv a lot and blah blah blah I say whatnot too much.

Did anyone notice that Kill successfully recruited 2 of the defensive studs from the Mt. Carmel team this year ?? I believe Kill is an excellent evaluator.

The one who really pisses me off is Lee Corso. It took years to recover from his blunders. He Didn't even stay a year.

And while we are on this topic, lets horseshoe the stadium, add an upper deck, rename streets, join the SEC, etc.!

Why would have anyone wanted DD to stay for the Orange Bowl? It would have been different if our next head coach wasn't already on staff, but giving Carey 15 (or whatever) bowl practices as head coach only could have helped heading into this year.

RE: Doerns first year 3-9
For a one-game deal, having the coordinators is far more important than the head coach. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, he was probably more important to Wisconsin's bowl prep in 2010 than he was to NIU's in 2012.

NIU was ready in the Orange Bowl. The bowl prep didn't suffer. Doeren's presence would have created one more distraction in an absolutely crazy month for NIU football. Maybe if we were interviewing for a new coach it would have been different, but Rod Carey was already on board. Other than to see it through (which I get), there wasn't much tangible reason for him to stay. Remember, the rest of the staff, including the guys who were off the NC State on January 2nd, stayed through. It was almost certainly a mutually-agreed upon decision.
