Looks like GT could be pretty respectable so far. This year's goals are to crush UGAg yet again and make the postseason.

I would not expect GT to stay down long in hoops

This is why I laugh at the fact that people assume that the teams currently at the bottom of the ACC will forever stay there. GT was national runner up and has had great teams to watch in the past. Clemson? Yes. Wake? Yes. FSU? Yes. Miami with Larranaga (this year set aside), BC point is every team beside Va Tech has at one time been a great team that I've enjoyed watching.

I agree with you about GT, WF, FSU, and the jury is still out on Miami with Larranaga, but I wouldn't get too excited about BC. When they're on, they aren't bad, but they aren't killer either. I'm also not sure if Clemson has ever been good at basketball. I doubt they care, but that's kind of the point.

Maybe you're right about Clemson but I just seem to remember a period back from 2006/2007 or so to 2010 where clemson was ranked I think they even hit the top 10 when Wake was about #2

RE: Open Thread - 2013-2014 Basketball Season
I wouldn't expect GT to be all that good with Gregory. Better than the final Hewitt years but never consistently better than .500 in the ACC.

I enjoyed VT beating WVU just now.

Clemson had a few pretty good years under Purnell once he got things into place.

Wasn't BC a solid basketball team the last several years in the Big East and first few in the ACC? Why couldn't they improve enough to be a respectable ACC team again?

Who were the Miami fans saying they'd finish top half of the ACC this year?

Jury is still out. Recruiting is good. He has done well in fixing the gaping fundamental flaws. He started with an absolutely EMPTY cubbard. The most talent-less roster I can ever remember a GT basketball team having. And in 3 years there is now legit depth in all positions. The only piece missing is a NBA caliber guard. He has brought in all the former players and legends and gotten them around the program again. Bobby Cremins is helping on various projects in the athletic department. Gregory goes to the football games and is involved around campus. He beat UGAg in Athens ... something that hadn't happened in something like 30 years. In fact he has never lost to UGAg. Every year has been marked improvement.

Basically everything you could ask of him so far.

He took the program over when it had no pulse. I'd say after two years it is now respectable. In another two can it be competitive at the highest levels? To be determined.

If you want some laughs just go read their board.

I mean they did just lose a 17 point lead to a team that lost to USC Upstate, the worst ACC team, and a hated rival all in one.

Wow, how in the world does this happen? VT loses to a team that most ACC teams could whoop up in their sleep and then gets down to WV by 17 points (which is understandable) and then come back to win the game?

Meanwhile, what is wrong with Huggy Bear? Has he tilted one too many and now its affecting his coaching skills? This man used to be one of the top 10 or 12 coaches in the country.

This is a fairly common occurrence amongst ACC schools.

RE: Open Thread - 2013-2014 Basketball Season
as much as i love watching TCU/wvu fail (and believe me i do) i really feel bad for the huggy bear and that wvu bb program. in a single season huggy got cut off from his prime recruiting grounds and now as to build a bb program as an outlier school in a conference where almost every school is a football only school and kansas's b***h. even if there was a decent recruit in texas that huggy could get how the heck do you expect to convince him to come to wvu to play b12 schools? "hey you.....wanna leave texas and come to west virginia???????" <== good luck with that pitch.

theres just no way he can compete with memphis kansas smu & texas recruiting wise anymore.

then theres the whole massive travel increase to it thats gotta be a major drain on the team.

in all of conf. realignment no one program got hurt more than this wvu BB team & the huggy bear. just 4 years ago he was considered after boeheim the coach with the best shot to hit the 900 wins benchmark.

now it looks like he wont even break 800

are vcu/uva traditional rivals or has it always been a case of scrub vs power program?

Jury is still out.

I'm fine with your observation. I observed him quite a bit, too.

The dude struggled to finish above .500 in the A-10 despite having arguably the best combination of facilities, fanbase size and basketball budget in the conference. In his last six years he finished above .500 just once (same amount of times he finished higher than 7th) and couldn't win on the road in conference play. It's not like he had to rebuild UD, either. His predecessor did that.

I suppose he could do better than that at GT. I just don't expect it.

I wouldn't call UVA a scrub, but VCU has been a basketball power for several years now.
