RE: ***Official Memphis vs CBU Game Thread***
No offense to anyone, but CBU isn't chopped liver at the Div II level. At the Div I level they are horrible and would be last place in pretty much every single conference that is in the top 12. They would struggle to win 1-2 games and they would lose the majority of those by high double digits.

We have seemed to struggle early on, and yes, Pastner has shown that he would rather just beat a team then blow them out. He seems to call the dogs off sometimes with 10+ minutes left in the game and doing that as a team you do not develop a killer instinct.

We need to come out strong, beat them by as much as we can possibly do in the first 35-36 minutes. The last 4-5 minutes of the game is when you bring in the end of the bench and try to test different players in different situations.

That generally how MOST good teams do it. The good thing is that this season we really don't have any of your typical end of the bench players. In my opinion every single player on our team can compete and play with the best at any given time.

We will be fine, I haven't been this excited about Tiger basketball in 4 years. Looking forward to a great season and great effort from our players. That starts tonight.

The Alabama Crimson Tide beat West Georgia a Division II team Monday in a exhibition game, but needed overtime and a comeback for a 65-64 win.

Sucks for them.

Good thing that doesn't have anything to do with Memphis 03-razz.

It is way too early in the season to put so much emphasis on one game. Should we beat them into the ground? Yes. If we do not does that accurately reflect how the rest of the season will go? Absolutely not.

All coaches use these games as a final chance to feel their team and individual players out, especially the new guys. We know how they react in practice and closed scrimmages. However, we do not know how they will react in front of a large crowd in the FedEx Forum. There is no way to truly prepare a young man for that or to know how a player will react to that. Some guys are "gamers", okay in practice and great in games. Other players are practice superstars. I remember hearing about how Barham never missed in practice, but he could not make anything in games. Stan was fantastic all summer through practice and did not nothing all season. These games allow Pastner to get a feel for who is who, work on multiple rotations to see what groups play well together, and try different offensive and defensive sets to see what rotations run what plays/defenses best. Really it is a game in a game if you will. That is why I never get wrapped up into these scores too much. Do I feel better when we beat teams like this by 50? Yes, but it is not the end all be all.

GO Tigers!

Not the rest of the season, but it certainly foretold a slow start last year.

We're loaded with seniors and have had time to hone our game for weeks. If we're able to hang with top 25 Baylor down four players, we should be smashing tiny little CBU no matter what lineup we're running.

RE: ***Official Memphis vs CBU Game Thread***
The 2007 team that won 25 games in a row and went to the Elite 8 barely beat SMU that season, in March, a few days before the CUSA tournament began, so any team can struggle at any time. Am I hoping that we destroy CBU by 30+? Yes, as I suspect we all are. However, if we don't, I am not going to immediately start doubting the ability or desire of the team and/or coaching staff. How we fare against a D2 team in an exhibition game on November 8 matters little in the grand scheme of things. The point is to see how guys compete in game situations against a real opponent and getting the team ready for the first game that counts. As another poster mentioned, we have guys up and down the bench that can play, and they all need time on the floor. Pastner's strategy, substitution patterns, player combinations, etc. will probably look much different tonight than they will against Austin Peay or in Stillwater.

If tonight's game is closer than we think it should be (as recent history suggests it will), I'm not all that concerned.

These aren't real opponents. We're playing a D2 team. The Tigers have got stiffer competition in practice every day. There's no reason after weeks of practice with a senior laden team that we should be confused and rusty in November like last season.

I hope CBU plays all zone and uses the shot clock...we always seem to see a lot of that...so let's get used to it.

I would like to see where we are defensively and also see a full court press (which Pastner may not expose in an exhibition game).

No kidding. Hopefully, we have been working on ball movement against a zone and penetrating zones to break them down.
