I wouldn't know anything about the leasing issues, etc. But, as far as passenger service, from a convenience standpoint I think most people in the area would much rather fly out of TOL than DTW. However, it usually seems to be worth the money savings to drive all the way to DTW and put up with the distant parking and long walks. Plus, I think there are better options for flights. The last time I tried to fly out of TOL the flight was canceled and I had to rush to DTW anyway and just barely catch the last available flight for the day.

Agreed. When I come up to see a Toledo game I would much rather fly into TOL as it is far easier to get in and out of.
Regarding the loss of passenger service and option from TOL, it appears according to all of the articles that those that run the airport simply don't care. They don't try to foster a good relationship with the passenger carriers, almost ignoring them entirely. There is business to be had at TOL, just think of all those in Detroit that would drive South to fly out of TOL instead if it were an option, which it currently is NOT.

the problem i have with toledo express is that it flies to limited cities and it costs about $150 more than driving to detroit and flying from there, also they have these little puddle hoppers that make it hard for three emaciated people to sit in the same row.

TOL more convenient than DTW? Depends upon, which highway you're closest to I guess. I think I can get from anywhere along 280 to DTW quicker than, wherever TOL is. Is that still in Lucas County? Ohio?

As implied in your post, the lack of TOL ability to compete with Detroit with the number of direct flights to different locations is severely limited because TOL will never be able to offer direct flights to as many locations as do the major hubs such as Detroit. I remember a couple occasions in the 1980's (at a time when TOL was actively trying to promote passenger traffic) spending the night in Chicago because my flight from the west coast was late and I missed the last connecting flight of the day (night) from Chicago to Toledo.

as is with the rest of toledo, theres someone who needs their gears greased and isnt budging on whatever they need to get the ball rolling on toledo's airport. it could be so much more. hell, if air force one can land here, the sky is the limit

The proximity to DTW shouldn't be a huge deal - Flint is closer to DTW than Toledo, and they have plenty of airlines and direct flights out of there. I flew out of Flint for the Florida game, and it was only around $200 for non-stop.

You are right about Flint. It offers a lot more direct flights than I realized which does suggest that TOL could make a better effort to increase the commercial flight options. Could it be that they are satisfied with just their air freight operations and hosting the Air National Guard squadron?
Flint lists 3 direct flights to Florida (Tampa, Orlando, Ft. Myers) as well as direct flights to Baltimore-Washington, Las Vegas and the following airline hub cities: Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Minneapolis and Atlanta. That is an impressive number, but of course it still pales in comparison to the number of direct flight options from Detroit.

I've always wanted to fly into TOL but I could never find a reasonable option for less than $100 more (often times, less than $200-$300 more), and taking into account that it's only 25-30 minutes additional driving from DTW to get to Toledo ... I've always flown into Detroit.

Yeah, but most of the flights out of Flint are probably 1 way!
That is surprising, though.
I remember reading somewhere years ago where they said the day would probably come when TOL would basically be a cargo hub only, which wouldn't be such a bad thing. Move the cargo traffic into Toledo instead of Detroit; let Detroit handle the passenger business. Hook I-80/90 into 475 (I don't believe there is a connection at this time, is there?) There is rail right there, too. With some infrastructure investment it seems like TOL could become a major cargo hub.
As far as the Guard, they've had to battle to keep the base here. Unfortunately, that could go away at any time.

Flew home from Philly Thursday night and sat in the middle of the Drexel WBB team headed for UT tourney. Had a very interesting conversation with a player. One of the topics was why they didn't fly into Toledo. I told her about the distance from DTW to Toledo and that this offered a lot better selections of flights and she understood. TOL in its current format is a non-player. In my previous job I had colleagues who lived in the northern burbs of Motown. If we both left at the same time, I always beat them to DTW. Flight selection, terminals, airlines all hands down favor DTW. Only advantage is parking costs. Days of TOL being of use to real business traveler are long gone. Not sure how we get the freight business our of Willow Run but it would probably be a more profitable move for TOL than the huge spend to try to get the passengers back...JMO

its another example of toledo being afraid to spend money to make money.
they have all the land in the world to expand the airport and make it an option instead of detroit and never will. someones going to have to start talking about building their own to get toledo to do it. kinda liek the rossford arena. same with the arena,didnt build it big enough so huge acts bypass toledo....again.
no up to date summer ampitheater either.
