Southern Miss was never a real powerhouse.
yessir...totally agree with one exception....our core fan base is....that's what makes it fun
Do you mean me and the 14 other people at the 2002 Houston Bowl? Thanks, man. We appreciate that.
I didn't see you there. I did see about 25,000 orange t-shirts though.
I was there, and there were probably more like 40,000 orange T-shirts there, following a team we had beaten in Stillwater and in Hattiesburg in the two prior years.
I don't think that the Houston Bowl turned me into the #1 fan or anything close to that. But I would say that it contradicts a lot of the things people have said about me here. And I think that our pathetic showing at that game really gets at the heart of what's wrong with Southern Miss athletics. It's not the market, or the IHL board, or TV, or any of that crap.

I think you're a great fan. We have great fans, but not enough of them
I think that crappy fan support is what let Louisville and TCU pass us up. Fiscal conservatism is what let ECU, etc. pass us up. Monken was cheaper than Johnson who was cheaper than Fedora. Selling the Nebraska game was cheaper than keeping it. Staying in CDOA was cheaper than moving up.
For two years, we counted beans like an Amish spinster, and (surprise, surprise) it didn't work. Our own AD bitched and moaned about every penny, even after a bunch of CPAs sent down from Jackson formally attested to his incorrectness. Our fans bought into it because people from Mississippi don't like spending money. (If you don't believe me, you haven't been there.)
You can call me a fool and say we didn't have the money to spend. But was any source of ongoing funding ever really proposed or discussed? No; it was always about spending less, or going hat-in-hand to some rich person or institution for a quick fix.
It's been said that poverty is a state of mind, and I agree. Jesus did not descend on Lincoln, Starkville, or Tallahassee and declare, "thou shalt have much more money than Hattiesburg." But the way some of us talk, you'd think it were so.

I agree we don't have enough....wish we had more, but the cold hard fact is our fan base is scattered all over the place. Hell, just in my core group we have people that drive from ATL, from JXN, and from Baton Rouge to come to home games. Let me also say in '11 at the CC game in Houston, we had a few more than 14....even at Rice last year, we had a decent showing ~1K despite having EJs dumbarse at the helm....it's gotten better...when we start winning again it will make a difference.
It's going to be interesting how Big Mac works out. He's going to the huge on the money side. So far he is making friends. Let's give him time to do his job. What's done is done and as the fan I know you are, be tolerant and give him a couple of years to operate. Same with Monken. In two years, we will know where we stand. None of our issues can be fixed with a couple of heel clicks or a witch nose twitch.
Right now, I am happy with all the major players we have in place. Time will dictate how successful they are with the opportunity they have. They all know they have a challenge of a lifetime ahead of them....this ain't gonna be an easy fix.
