RE: I think this 16 team Eastern conference will exist in the near future.
That wouldn't be a bad lineup at all, SPF. Army and Navy would help tremendously with the TV contract too...
Of course, getting Army and Navy to come on board with this idea is another matter...

RE: I think this 16 team Eastern conference will exist in the near future.
(1) I think that BYU will find that moving into a conference will be the best way to possibly earn themselves a playoff spot. They will not go back to the MWC.
(2) The B12 will not expand; if Texas leaves, they will take others with them (Tx Tech, OK and OK State); this move would most likely be "west" and not "north" or "east". They would go to the PAC 12.
(3) The ACC will try to entice Notre Dame to join; if the Irish say "yes" then you will see either Cincinnati, Navy or even Army join them. Most likely Cinci.
(4) If the B12 does implode, they will not expand but rather be picked apart by other conferences. In this scenario, Iowa State, Baylor, TCU and possibly Kansas State could be in trouble (although Kansas would probably bail them out).
(5) UConn might be an attractive pick for the B10 at some point.
(6) The AAC will expand in the future, probably by getting all of the MWC or some of the MWC to join them. Pods would be established...
(7) The conference Wilkie proposed will never happen.

UConn is in the top 20% of FBS academically.
UConn is in the top 33% of FBS by athletic budget.
UConn has 16 national championships in basketball, men's soccer, and field hockey.
UConn is the land grant, flagship school in the wealthiest state in the U.S.
Yes, we obviously fit well with Western Kentucky, Marshall, and ODU. Can we add Georgia State and Southern Alabama?

Ouch! That hurts. You sure know how to kick a guy when he's down. What a difference a year makes!

A. Notre Dame is already in the ACC.
B. Army has no chance in Hell of an ACC invite. Navy get's an invited after Penn State and especially Texas are off the table and the exact nature of the playoff system is known. If ND is forced to play 8 instead of 5 league games - FORCED - then ND only has a limited say in that ACC's 16th team. For ND to NAME the 16th team, they have to agree to up their games to 8 before they are forced to up them by the D-4 rules. If the B12 breaks up, Cincy could again lose out in the ACC.

The B12 once again looks again to be in a state of disarray, have zero vision, and at the mercy and call of UT. If this conference survives the next go around of realignment I will be surprised. Horrible leadership, no vision, and hostages to UT.

None of the P5 wanted you, until the ACC lost a team. Then an invite happened... I think what folks are speculating about here is future realignment/invites... so your barb would apply to everyone being discussed. This isn't the 'past realignment moves' forum...

Huh? We're about to be in a conference with both. Obviously they wouldn't.

With all the success that Louisville has experience of late, if the ACC hadn't picked them up the B12 would have...

...never really understood why the BigXII didn't also offer Louisville and Cincy when WVU was added... it would have been a decent 'pod' in the east...

Because all the Big XII needed to fulfill their TV contract was 10 teams. Any more would have reduced the payout to the other schools, and nobody was willing to vote for a pay decrease...

...yep...this is where the probable 'network negotiation' for the Big XII to expand for playoff format will be interesting...
