RE: Kent State Basketball 2013-2014 Season
Rasean Davis is a perfect "MAC Big", so great get by Senderoff. I like the fact that Senderoff is bringing in more HS Seniors and D1 transfers in this class than JCs. Hopefully Jimmy Hall stays out of trouble this year and hits the film room/weight room, so that he is ready to go next season.

Rosel Hurley is extermely talented/athletic wing/SG, from a local HS. Good to see Senderoff/staff getting more local players and I read on a few sites, that Hurley could be the best senior in NEO.

Who is paying their own way this year? Hall? Lawrence? I know last year Scott did.

On a side note, I looked back in time and saw that Coach Senderoff signed a 3 yr deal and this is yr 3. Did he get additional yrs for a certain amount of wins or other incentives?
Here is the info from Elton Alexander's article:
**Senderoff's KSU contract is for three years at $250,000 per year, with built-in bonuses for meeting incentives, but not step raises.

**At Northern Illinois, new men's basketball coach Mark Montgomery signed a five-year, $300,000-a-year pact. The Huskies finished 9-21, 10-20 and 10-20 the last three seasons, compared with Kent's 19-15, 24-10 and 25-12 with a pair of Mid-American Conference regular-season titles in that same span.

**"One of the things with Rob, that he made clear to us, is that he is committed to Kent State," Nielsen said. "He wants to be a head coach here for a long time. That was part of his presentation that I heard loud and clear.
"The thing that I will be is very responsive to the market, very responsive to the marketability of our head coaches, meaning that if the case presents itself, I have no problems walking into President [Lester] Lefton's office and talking about reworking contracts.
"We felt for coach Senderoff, this was a fair contract for his first coaching job."

Agreed dannyb73. I guess Senderoff/staff know what they have with him being a senior.

These quotes are interesting from Senderoff and hopefully the rotation gets figured out sooner rather than later, as the team had the trip to the Caribbean, 10 extra practices this summer, & now the practices thus far.

"It's been one of those deals where consistency is probably the biggest issue," said Senderoff. "I could tell you who our top four players are very easily, but from five to 12 on one day somebody could be five and on the very next day they could be 12. That could be a good thing in terms of having depth, but at the same time it's not necessarily a good thing because guys have not separated themselves enough by being consistent. At some point, I'm gonna have to settle on who we're going to play, and I need some consistency to be able to do that."

I assume he means that the top 4 players are Brewer, Goodson, Jackson, & Henniger?

I was reading this article, and this made me laugh "'They were consistent with recruiting me and staying in contact with me,' he said about Kent State. 'That meant something to me. A lot of coaches wouldn’t call me and text me as much as Kent'" - Coach Sendy has a deep history of extensive communications with potential recruits, especialy from his time at Indiana

Sendy automatically gets an extra year on his contract when he wins 20 games in a season I believe.

Yes. Sendy has had two ex tensions based upon 20 win seasons.

I thought Evans ate up a lot of the time at 4 last year. After December last year, it was mainly Carter & Holt at guards, Goodson at the 3, Evans at 4, and Tabb & Henniger at what passes for the 5 at Kent.
Starting with the Cleveland State game, the starting lineup was nearly always Holt and Brewer at guard, Evans and Henniger or Tabb at forward, and Goodson listed at guard or forward.
I'm worried who replaces Evans; the Henniger/Tabb/Spicer/Ortiz rotation is the same as last year, and with Goodson still at the 3, who plays the 4 this year? I'm hoping Tabb steps up there, and Khaliq expands his role in the 5. I'm also guessing that Devin Carter backs up Goodson at the 3, replacing Pope

Evans was the 3, and Goodson was usually the 4. At least in terms of execution, Darren has a strong post game for 6'5". Chris played on the wing almost exclusively. Evans' measurements were also fudged quite a bit.

I presumed it was a slip of the keyboard, and he actually meant Brewer.

Yes, I meant Brewer. I can't keep the names straight. I'll really be lost in a couple of years, if we have Devin Carter and Devon Andrews comes in. I'll be calling them both Deveraux

I see Justin Brunswick ended up at Georgetown KY in NAIA. Georgetown won the NAIA national championship last year. I had high hopes for him as the tall guy who spent 2011-2012 stand at center circle around while the active roster warmed up before games. ESPIN's review of him back in 2010 was "Power forward with solid athletic ability. Has a great upside because of his bounce. Needs to add strength. Gets pushed around inside. Has a decent face up game. Can shoot out to 15-17 feet. Ok shotblocker defensively. He is soft too. May be able to fix it with added ..." etc

From the way Kellen Thomas was doing in the Slam dunk contest at Hoops & Halloween, I expect that he's pretty much recovered from knee surgery. Met most of the players there, and also saw Brian Frank there. It was also interesting to see Coach Sendy in a Jackie Moon from the Semi-Pro movie. Derek Jackson won the Slam dunk contest over Thomas, Scott, and Lawrence

Here are the preseason for in-depth rankings from ESPN Insider for all MAC teams for the 2013-14 season, by Dan Hanner.

Rank Team POFF PDEF BC WC Conf Rank
98 Akron 102.9 95.3 63rd 137th 1st in MAC
115 Ohio 105.1 99.3 72nd 156th 2nd in MAC
143 Kent St. 105.0 101.8 89th 184th 3rd in MAC
150 Western Michigan 103.3 101.0 102nd 186th 4th in MAC
161 Toledo 107.0 105.4 98th 204th 5th in MAC
177 Youngstown St. 104.4 104.6 122nd 209th 4th in Horizon
181 Buffalo 103.1 103.3 112th 220th 6th in MAC
207 Miami (OH) 99.2 101.7 113th 262nd 7th in MAC
208 Cleveland St. 104.5 107.1 126th 250th 7th in Horizon
209 Eastern Michigan 96.0 98.5 121st 260th 8th in MAC
222 Bowling Green 96.7 100.4 127th 274th 9th in MAC
235 Central Michigan 102.8 108.0 151st 264th 10th in MAC
296 Ball St. 95.8 106.4 213th 305th 11th in MAC
304 Northern Illinois 89.7 101.2 217th 315th 12th in MAC

I included Cleveland St/Youngstown St just for geography purposes.

Here is the explanation of each column header.
As I have for the past few years, I have produced projections for every Division I college basketball team heading into the 2013-14 season.
I explained my formula in great detail in a post for RealGM.com, but the shortened version is this: I ran 10,000 simulations of every D-I player and each team's defense, and then ranked the teams 1-351 based on the median simulation.

The categories I provide for each team below are as follows:

2013-14 Team Previews
In advance of the college basketball season, ESPN Insider has previews for all 351 Division I teams and the projected order of finish for every conference. Previews + Standings
-Rank: Ranking based on median simulation
-POFF: Projected offense, median prediction for points scored per 100 possessions
-PDEF: Projected defense, median prediction for points allowed per 100 possessions
-BC: Best-case scenario, 90th percentile simulation rank
-WC: Worst-case scenario, 10th percentile simulation rank
-Conf Rank: Ranking within conference

When I implemented the best- and worst-case scenario simulation this year, I expected there to be some teams with very low variance -- specifically teams that were returning a lot of experienced players.

According to this, it looks like Cleveland State is off a bit this year. I was thinking the Cleveland State game would be tough, and the Youngstown State game a bit easier, but this says we're more closely matched up with YSU

Cleveland State could be pretty darn good. The return of Anton Grady will be huge for the Vikings. Too often, pre-season rankings are based on the previous year's performance. Losing Grady was like losing Chris Evans or Treadwell. There is also a big center who transferred from (Oregon?) that should add to their frontcourt. I perceive that their weakness will be guard play, but I could be wrong. I think the game at the MAC Center will be a tough one.

MAC's preseason press release, with media polls...

http://www.mac-sports.com/tabid/969/Arti...-Poll.aspx

Kent gets whitewashed in the preseason All-MAC East team, and lines up in 4th place in the East Division predictions. I wonder why they even schedule the games.
