Like I said, I admire the man for standing up for what he believed, but "history" has turned him into a saint, which he was not. He freed the slaves not because he was an angle, but because the proclamation kept England and France out of the war. Those two were about to join the south. Also, even Lincoln himself said he would defend the Union, without or without freeing the slaves. Why do you think slavery wasn't outlawed in the border states? He also suspended habeas corpus. Look it up. Lot more to Lincoln than what you see in a Spielberg movie. Having said that, I still think comparing him to Putin is a tad silly.

When Russia strips Gay persons of citizenship, bans them from all civil liberties, fosters a climate of extreme violence against LGBT persons, and advocates burning them alive in ovens, Godwin's Law does NOT apply to Russia.

Putin going after Ukraine is very similar to Lincoln going after the South... Putin = Lincoln, indeed.

Putin didn't outlaw something that the Ukraine was against. They are nowhere alike.

Lincoln was a republican. Putin a communist dictator.

The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.

If the Civil War was about slavery, why did fighting begin before the emancipation proclamation?

Lincoln needed France's help, so he made it about slavery about half way through.

I don't read all the posts in this website. But in the real-world, where people that have earned professional reputations have to make arguments in public or sign their names to public documents, conservatives are not "defending Putin."

They are noticing that the incumbent President of the United States happens to be a pathetic, incompetent weakling, with the same grasp of global power that one might expect from a child. But just because Obama is a fundamentally soft, unserious person doesn't mean that everyone else around the world is. Putin and others like him are constantly gauging America's power and resolve, and planning their next moves accordingly.

How is that defending Putin?

Why did Lincoln do what he did? Why has Putin done what he has done? Lincoln did not seek to control the world and expand his empire - he sought to re-unite the country and enact social changes. Putin is seeking to expand his empire and his only interest is in "protection" of Russian-speaking people, like what Hitler's Third Reich did in Poland for instance.
