I have never seen us lose to ecu in person -- well, since I graduated. I may go to greenville one last time just to keep our "other" homefield advantage intact.

USM is the one team I would hope ECU would keep on its schedule. Both schools have been like brothers to each other while other schools were afraid to schedule either in football.

For the most part, the ECU fans on the boards are good people. If you just ignore StillJonesing and PirateMarv, the online experience is much better.

I hope that some kind of series can continue between our two schools.

There is a Herd on this board wishing that ECU burns to the ground and hoping that the stadium in on people and kill them; but you dislike my statements that disagree with football predictions for your team. Yeah your sense of decency is not to out of kilter.

I'm sure that's the same Herd fan that wished serious injury on one of our players. I just look at that guy as an anomaly; we're fans of college athletics, not world wars where people are seriously injured.

I've never met a Herd fan in person that wasn't warm, personable, welcoming and a great college football fan.

All schools have fans that are zoned "unusual." I know my school has got our share +.

As one of four this Herd named shows nothing but hate toward ECU and its supporters who do not agree with him. As far as I am concern he and couple of his friends are nothing but "blunners" who have little or no Cusa success to back up its statements is the source of its pain. Thanks goodness you are one of the very few Marshall fans who will support you and your statements such as "wishing that ECU burn to the ground and hoping that the stadium falls in on people and kill them"........you truly need help:(

RE: Marshall & ECU
One of my dearest friends in the world graduated from East Carolina (and still lives in the Greenville area.) Every year on November 14, he sends me a text message with something along the lines of "thinking of you and your school today" and also makes it a point to wear something green that day. A few years back, he sent me a picture where some people had apparently came to Greenville and laid flowers at the memorial for the team down there. (Which happens to be on my bucket list.)
Last year after the football game, he called me in time for me to hear the Marching Pirates play through "E.C. Victory" after the win. (I may or may not have started that a few years ago by calling him and drunkenly singing "Sons" after we beat you all in Huntington.) While this happens to be me and one person, I have a feeling that the Pirate fans that bought me booze on Beale Street in Memphis or the random ECU fan that high-fived me marching to the stadium one year would do the same if they had my phone number.

What's the point in all of this?

The fact that ECU-Marshall is more than just a rivalry. Yes, for that length of time that we're locked on the gridiron, we're at each others throats and ready to kill, but the moment the game is over, it becomes about a special bond that no other schools in the country can say they have together. ECU-Marshall is more than about a game of football, it's about two communities 453 miles apart that are eternally linked together. It's about 75 people who will forever be remembered by both towns. It's one of the greatest sports stories ever told.

I will be the first to admit it. When they aren't playing us, I cheer for ECU. I wish them all the best, and hope they do well. For the sake of keeping the story alive, I really hope that this game continues regardless of what conference either team is in.

Ohio, WVU and either ECU, Miami or Toledo would be fine for non-conf. WVU wont play us anymore so Ohio and ECU, Miami or Toledo would be great to play every year.

Who in their right mind would wish death, etc. to another person on a message board. That's just freaking stupid. Yeah, we get on each others nerves but this thing isn't life or death. Frankly in the grand scheme, it means nothing.
My best friend is from Huntington, now lives in Salisbury. Got his BA from Marshall and MA from ECU.

Dude, if you are trying to pin the burning stadium comment on me you need to review a little closer. I personally don't like you because you like to throw out kumbaya posts and then taint them with a jab only to play the "what, I just want us to get along and respect everybody" card.

If you are going to try and call somebody out at least make sure you have the right person.

RE: Marshall & ECU
This posting thread is typical of many, many posts. What starts out as a legitimate informational post (in this case, commenting on Marshall's OOC scheduling and being positive about a continuation of the ECU/MU series...which would be a GREAT thing IMHO), then turns into a flame war between a fairly small number of fans/posters that don't seem to be able to help themselves, followed by a set of posters who try to put things into perspective and re-right the ship.

Honestly, sometimes its a struggle to weed through all the chaff on this board to see the few nuggets of wheat that lay within.

The only thing I have ever found about the ECU vs Marshall series that I don't like, is the lunatic fringe posters that hang out on message boards. The Marshall fans I have met in person have been nothing but nice

The only thing I would not like about the series going forward is Marshall is good. I like a OOC formula that looks like this
1 Solid P5 Regional team aka South Carolina, VT, UNC...so so team but they own us unfortunately 03-puke
2 Mediocre P5 Regional team NCST 50-50 shot at beating them most years, UVA, Duke etc..
3 P5 in name only Indiana, Iowa St, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, etc.. Nice names but good chance at winning
4 Very winnable Gang of 5 game which Marshall while a winnable game is always going to be tough and with Doc coaching and recruiting only gets more difficult to beat.

I like and respect ECU and their fans greatly. And, since I live 1.5 hours away, versus 6 to Huntington, I make just about as many ECU games as Marshall games. I just can't root for them nearly as passionately.

That's the exact formula I think we should follow for 3 of the slots. No to the 4th. I think you double up on the 2nd or 3rd options and if you can't get them then you skip the gang of 5 all together because there is nothing much to be gained by beating them especially relative the risk/reward of losing on their home field. Beating Marshall, USM, ODU in the future does nothing for us and we will lose eventually.

If you can't double up on another 2nd or 3rd options take a FCS layup at home. I'm not talking about ranked FCS teams like App State or ODU, some god awful one like NC A&T that will still bring 3-5k fans too and you can get a warm up but that counts the same as tough ones.

RE: Marshall & ECU
I was at the plane crash game as a youngster. I remember my Dad pulling over the car when we heard the news. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Marshall and respect their program.

OOc scheduling will be more of a challenge for ECU in the AAC. I expect we will focus on schools closer to Greenville that will bring fans and not have to give up a return trip....ie..UNCC,ODU,ASU. I still hope to play Marshall and USM when the schedule allows on a periodic basis..but.. I doubt that any extended home and home series will occur going forward. Honestly..it would not really be in the best interests of either school.

RE: Marshall & ECU
November 14, 2020 just so happens to fall on a Saturday. That is also the 50 year mark of the crash. It has lost just about all the steam it once had, but there was a large group getting together to try to make a push to get Gameday here for what would have been the ECU game. (I'm sure CUSA would have scheduled ECU at Marshall that day.) That was all before the realignment mess. When ECU left, a lot of people gave up. I think it would be great if both schools could come together for a series, just as long as that date be in Huntington.

That would be wonderful to do it on the 50 year mark. Heck, that could be a gameday worthy game.
