Legally your land lord cannot restrict you to one cable/satellite provider. That's an FCC law. You can choose between whoever provides service in the area.

I also only read the Blah articles formally linked on here. 03-yawn

There are a number of ways they could have achieved their goal without making threats and alienating people. I guess it goes to show the desperate position one of America's formerly great newspapers is in. It also confirms how they monitor sources like this forum for information and ideas. Our local media is truly pathetic.

And I just got a call last weekend from The Blade to renew my subscription...not happening. I had The Blade for 3 years, recently canceled it and I don't miss it. I also won't be linking articles anymore...why give that website ANY extra traffic.

Maybe it's time to have a contest... Like to see whose dog can leave the biggest steamer on the front page of an old copy of the (insert name of local fishwrap in Lucas County). Post pictures in a new thread, winner gets the adoration of Rocket Nation.

Monitor?

We know Ryan drops in and I'm pretty sure a couple have mentioned working for the paper. It's not unusual to see a discussion topic here suddenly become a Hack or Ryan column and that's been a great thing for the fans. I don't think that's "monitoring." No doubt they do have software that automatically monitors who LINKS to their site. That's just good business.

I mean, the blather is all fun and games but it's not THAT serious.

As posted, I'm no fan of the paper and the "lawyer" line should have been left out of their response to GTSwagger (though they might also be contrained to put that in the response?), but they are not alone and they are in the right. It's not fair to them to copy entire articles into this board. It's their work and their product. Ranger apparently didn't understand that. Fair enough.

The part I do not get is, why are they trying to restrict people from seeing the non-subscriber portion of the on-line, the reason Ranger copy and pasted in the first place? He was trying to make their work available.

I would think they would have some articles that non-subscribers can read, if only to try and attract full subscribers. No one here ever linked to a subscription article.

yea i knew that because theres no drilling or equipment to install, they use the same cables that dish and everyone else does.

the FCC needs to look into why the blade and buckeye cable's parent company was able to keep other newspapers and cable companies out of toledo/ buy them out/ absorb them for so long.

where i grew up, there were so many national and local cable companies that basic cable WITH a box and remote was $20 a month.

here u get basic with no box or remote and its $60 a month.

Cities have historically had the right to negotiate cable contracts for the city, because the company needs city easements and right-of-ways to lay cable. I believe this is still true today. Some cities allow more than one provider, but most don't. The phone provider can be a competitor, because they already have the lines, but that usually means DSL and no/little TV, unless the phone company has laid fiber.

Yes, Waterville is the rare town with two cable providers.

We can insert links but the reason Ranger was copy and pasting was because duh'blade's site was kicking off some of the people clicking the link. It used a pop-up saying subscription was needed.

Previously, it was permitted to view the site a few times per day. This was reasonable, gave people a chance to see if they liked it enough to subscribe. But then it went haywire and wouldn't let you look even once (unless you turn off java script).

I'm not sure if it was a temporary glitch at the paper's site or intentional but either way, their response to GTSwagger was one sentence too long.
