I thought Toledo was our flagship since they have a long winning streak in football over Ohio....
Although that is obviously true regarding the domination of Ohio, the only self proclaimed "flagship" group among us is Ohio fans. How would this go over if Buffalo leapfrogs Ohio?

Does Amstutz still tell recruits that Toledo is about to join the Big East?

Buffalo to the Big Ten is 5+ years after NIU signs on with the Big12. How far off if ever is that? Enjoy the Bahama Bowl if you ever get there New York U.

I'd rather they stole Buffalo than a number of other teams.
One advantage of losing Buffalo is it makes more room for East Coast additions like JMU & Delaware.
Or the TARDledo plan of JMU, Delaware and VCU for 14 all sports with UMass FB-only.
Or.....just stay at 12 in FB, 11 in BB with UMass a FB only for 12. Then down the road when UMass moves on find a 12th replacement (Marshall?).
No plan of mine involves Delaware.
They might not be the most valuable school to add from a recruiting perspective....
A scenario:
B1G: Adds Buffalo/UConn
AAC: Adds UMass
The MAC in this case could go to 14 with Marshall, App State and James Madison....less travel for all 3 than aligning with SBC/CUSA. The ability to play mid week on ESPN would be a boost for recruiting.
The makes the MAC East almost into an Appalachian division with Ohio, Appalachian State, James Madison, Marshall and Kent, Akron, Miami all not far removed from Appalachia.
NO MARSHALL

Could we please stop trashing UB? This rumor was started by those West Virginia idiots and then posted here by some gullible Houstonian. Exactly ZERO UB fans think this is going to happen.

I don't think he's trashing NEW YORK (c'mon, get with it).
I agree that of the three listed departures, NIU to the Big 12 is ahead of New York to the Big Ten. I'm not sure where I'd put UMass to the ACC, maybe third.

What do you think you are linking to?
AAU membership list. None of those schools are listed which means the B1G probably wouldn't consider them.
Link works for me

I need my coffee, I read that wrong.
I read it as "see #8" and I couldn't understand what Cornell University had to do with anything. Sorry.

Right because from the B1G's perspective Rutgers was a low hanging fruit and Rutgers is much more highly regarded both athletically and academically than Buffalo.
Buffalo is a mid tier research school in the eyes of the elite universities and considered a good school in-state. Its hardly like we are talking Johns Hopkins here with a MAC level football team that the B1G is looking at.
The school is ranked #55 in total research dollars behind the University of Kentucky and the University of Georgia. Hardly is the school flying off the charts academically.
Federal research $$$ at Buffalo by year and National Rank
2009 (152 mil)-#55
2004 (173 mil)-#54
1999 (126 mil)-#56
1994 (140 mil)-#45
1990 (132 mil)-#38

You're not reading that doc right son, just cherry picking things... In some areas UB is ahead of some B1G school, in some area's UB is behind. Point is as a research institution we are a good fit for the B1G.
As to the poinless mention of Johns Hopkins, who cares. The pool of schools worth discussing are those with FBS football.

RE: Buffalo to the B1G?
Couple things Kittin, that ignores non federal research money where UB does Quite well (do you honestly think smAlbany does more research than us?)
But lets play those numbers... Schools ranked lower than UB on that table...
Iowa
Indiana
Purdue
Nebraska
And those are just the B1G schools lower than UB *on that list* there are also quite a few SEC,B1G, and P12 schools lower than UB.
Now as with all rankings the difference between 50-55 is not much so this doc breaks them into "groups"
Who else is in UB's group?
Michigan State, Rutgers, Purdue, *Princeton*, Indiana, Missouri..
So not only did you cherry pick you ignore the fact UB is groups with 4 of the Big 12 members and ahead of a couple in the form of Iowa and Nebraska.
All of this belies the fact that when you futre filter this list to teams with FBS football There are not a whole lot of schools left *not* in the Big5 that sit in UB's neighborhood.
Now... Why won't this happen? Our faculities and athletics are sub par for a mid major, no reason to think they would be better in a high major even with more money because we already spend at MAC levels.

Hopkins could sign a contract tomorrow to have their games played in the Raven's stadium an instantly be further ahead of UB in the conference pecking order.
I don't know about the B1G but the ACC would probably be happy with JHU joining the conference if they had a football team as a replacement for Maryland.

When Ifs and buts are candy and nuts....
Fact is *AMONG FBS SCHOOLS* UB is in the top tier institutionally I know that sticks in some folks craw to hear but it is the truth. It's also in a huge US state with no Public Power5 School and sends more alumni per year to NYC than Syracuse beleive me that's worth something.
It's also notable that UB is in the middle of adding 10K more students (to get up to 40K) and should bring it's endowment quite a bit higher as UB2020 is completed.
-- Edit
All that being said I have to reiterate that until UB gets its AD in line to the level of success that Ohio U, or NIU, or other good mid majors have seen nobody will take us seriously as a P5 expansion candidate).
